My band hosts a Sunday Blues jam at a local club. Last night the jam was smokin', with a crowd of great jammers including some of the best local harp guys: Mad Dog Friedman, Chris Richards, Victor Creazzi, and others. Last week we had Mojo Red come in to play.

We usually hit a few other jams every week. I always go to hear Al Chesis and Ronnie Shellist on harp. It's like a free lesson.

Point is... hitting jams where good harp guys play is a great way to hone your chops and pick up new licks. From Mad Dog I learn manic high-intensity riffing. From Al Chesis I learn the wisdom of phrasing with lots of space. And he gets huge tone.

From all the jammers (some of whom are pro players) I learn showmanship and pace. I always learn something.

Hosting a jam is a great tool for your band to network with other players and get better.

Here is a photo album from last nights jam.

(I hope this link works. The photos are also on our Myspace site.)

Do you go to jams regularly? Does your band host a jam?

I agree 100%

The importance of going to good jam sessions cannot be stated enough.
