Suppose you want to play Broken Toy at a jam.
What do you tell the band?

That would be a tough one at a jam unless you are just thinking of the instrumentals.

Listening to the lyrics on the cd, I thought, wow that is pretty self indulgent.

Then I saw Jason play it live, and he put it all out there, he left nothing hidden, he ripped his heart out with his fist and held it out for us all to see.

If you can sing it with that level of emotion and sincerity, then it might work.

Jon, it's in d minor in the version I've heard, played on a chromatic harp for the intro, then a C harp in 3rd position for the rest.

Yeah, I heard it on a bootleg of one of his performances. I feel it is a great song, period.

Without listening to it righ now, I seem to remember the chords were:

Dm Dm Am Am
I'm dead to all the living, living life after death
Dm Dm Gm Gm
I suffocate the breathing, every time I take a breath
Dm Dm Am Am
Well I'm an outsider, I'm a misfit, not a girl nor boy
Dm Gm Dm
well I feel like a broken toy
Gm Gm
I they ripped out all my stuffing, tore out my left eye
Dm
All my colors are faded, from years of tears I've cried

Well I'm a ...

Not so sure about the last part...need to listen to it again.
