Sorry to hear that we lost Dick Dale, King of the Surf Guitar.
A couple of short conversations with him had a lot of impact on my playing. He also spoke from the heart about hanging out with his grandson, surfing, skateboarding...
He was a self taught musician although he specifically told me he did not consider himself a musician as much as a "manipulator of the instrument". He did not read music although he used a form of tab for playing trumpet. Dick was in his 70's when I last saw him. He was shredding as big as ever. He would literally destroy 3 or 4 picks during one song. He clearly loved performing.
---------- It's about time I got around to this.

He was definitely one of the founders of rock regardless of whether he could read music. ---------- Music and travel destroy prejudice.

Aside from being able to pick at supersonic levels, the man was an expert in surviving some of the worst life has to offer. Cancer, nearly losing a leg, going broke multiple times . . . Dick Dale re-invented himself (successfully) more than a few times.

One by one, as we lose these incredible musicians and innovators, realize that NO ONE is taking their place and moving music forward any longer. Now we just get Justin Biebers/Miley Cyrus instead. ---------- The Iceman

@Iceman, that is a sad truth. We can only pray that some of the latest crop will by some miracle be curious and inspired enough to break new ground like our heroes did. ---------- Music and travel destroy prejudice.
