Hello All!

I’d like to make a recommendation to those of you who use iPads and the like... Riffmaster Pro...

This app can load and play songs from your device and gives you the ability to adjust the speed of the playback and adjust the pitch as well. You can play along to your favourite original tracks at half speed and still IN TUNE! What’s more you can select regions to loop for continuous practicing of riffs or licks.

I’m sure there are versions for Android and PC as well, but this is the app I have and I must say, it’s really helpful for those of us who play “by ear”.

I've been an ear player since day one also Tom. In the 70's we had LP records, then came cassette tapes. Tape players you could rewind to the spot you needed- very hit or miss- and LP's you had to kind of memorize what groove to set the needle arm into to get where you wanted to be to play along.

Some of my early development was that way while another avenue was Top 40 radio. Of course that depended on stuff like Super Tramp, Doobie Brothers, Rickie Lee Jones, etc., getting played when you had time and a harp handy.

I spent a lot of time alone, walking in the woods just outside town and working my way all over a harp.

Practice while alone is a good idea to a point, but there comes a time when one gets much benefit from playing with other people. Employing one's lessons out live or in a living room with some partners in crime is priceless.

Agreed. I blossom when I play with other people and feed off their fresh ideas.

Practice alone and with classic tracks are where I can build my courage and be unashamed in screwing up! I can take small pleasures in “sounding just like” and “playing with....” l

This software helps me with that second category.

I'm just starting to learn the harp, but, when practicing banjo I use VLC Media Player. I can slow down or speed up video or sound files. I also use Audacity for sound files. Both are free downloads. I haven't tried them when practicing harp as my beginner lesson tunes are slow so far.
