For years I’ve fought the urge to ‘collect’ in most fields, but I still gather CDs unashamedly
Some recent acquisitions:

Collard Greens & Gravy “Luedella”
Strong collection of mainly classic songs covered. Great production quality

Jon Atkinson “Raw Blues” featuring a strong group of players and a few Big Jon originals. I bought the download and the CD. Unfortunately the CD doesn’t play well in my machine. It stops between each track, but sounds great when it’s playing. If I set the machine to ‘random’ it will play the entire disc, just not in a predictable order. Kim Wilson plays harp on every track I think. Cool release.

Carey Bell “Blues Harp” and “Gettin’ Up”. I love both these recordings for different reasons. Blues Harp is the first record Carey made under his own name, and Gettin’ Up I think is the last record release, of live recordings from performances in 2006.
I just love the way he played. I could play these recordings on repeat for a long time.

I have the Big Walter “with Carey Bell” on the way. I have been listening to tracks from it for years, also own a copy of Dave Barrett’s transcriptions of each track. I think Carey Bell only plays harp on a couple of tracks, and bass on a couple more (can’t quite remember), but the Walter Horton stuff is really great on that record anyway.

Also have 3 Mark Hummel albums on the way, although at least 2 of those feature mainly other players.
One thing I noticed, if you are interested in Mark Hummel stuff you can pay through the nose on Amazon, whereas prices on Bluebeat Music are far better. Some of the prices on Amazon are totally ott

Hi Super, you mirror my collection very closely. Big Walter, Carey Bell and I have some of Mark Hummel's blues bash collectives. I've also got really into George Harmonica Smith and William Clarke especially the chromatic pieces they do.
Cheers John

I’m loving the chromatic at the moment,John.
I have a big gap in my George Smith collection. Between Tribute to Little Walter and Teardrops Will Fall, I only have ‘the complete Blue Horizon sessions’ which is really Bacon Fat but features GS rather heavily.

I am still missing a few William Clarke records too I think. I have Groove Time, Serious Intentions, and Blowing Like Hell.
Ronnie Shellist recommended Groove Time to me, but mainly for the diatonic stuff I think. Ronnie cited it as an early source of material for his development.

Bluebeat is a great site. The owner is massively helpful and knowledgeable. I've given him lots of money over the years. He's got stuff that is hard to find anywhere.

The Hummel Blowout CD's on the Mountain Top label are really good and worth owning. I went to many of those shows.

One of my favorite Carey Bell CD's is Deep Down on Alligator. I think it might be one of his best records. He was a force of nature. I remember seeing him at one of the Hummel Blowouts. The lineup was filled with great players. When Carey stepped on stage, his sound was so huge that he made the rest of the players sound like little boys.

A couple of players that I've been listening to quite a bit lately are Snooky Pryor and Mac Simmons.

I’m reading about Mac Simmons, Joe. Do you think there’s a standout recording or period?

I like the Cadillac Baby recordings. I also really dig High & Lonesome, but that one is pretty hard to find. The ones on Electro-Fi are good.

Totally agree with you and Joe about Bluebeat Music. It Charlie Lange ain't got it, he can tell you whether or not it can be had. Ian Collard is a killer harp player. I've been listening to his stuff since his first Collard Greens and Gravy. I have a lotof Cary Bell's stuff. Heartaches and Pain is a good one on Delmark. He plays some great sideman stuff on Eddie C Campbell's King of the Jungle. JSP released a bunch of Cary's recordings, too. Can't go wrong with any of Hummel's releases, either.

JTThirty, thanks for the tip on the Eddie C Campbell record. I appreciate you.
you know, i cant think of a weak record on delmark. its a label i think of as synonymous with great records

I'm looking forward to hearing Ian locally in the next couple weeks. He's about to do some gigs backed by Peter Cornelius. A lot of the production on the new 'Luedella' album was done by Jon Atkinson at Bigtone studios. (I see Jon is about to release the new Kim Wilson album too, btw).
Ian has been doing a project based on the Jr Wells' Hoodoo Man Blues album recently. I think that's in conjunction with the '3 Kings' lineup, which features Benny Peters on guitar. they are doing live gigs where they play all the songs from the album. Don't know if he plans to record it.

the 1st of the Hummel records arrived "harmonica party". Bunch of fun tracks but i was inspired by the instrumental 'Hand Jive'.

The Hummel Blowout record I ordered turned up yesterday. It’s not one of the Mountain Top albums though, it’s on ElectroFi. Will chase down the Mountain Top releases too.
I like this record a lot. Magic Dick, Paul DeLay, James Harman, Johnny Dyer, Rick Estrin, Sam Myers, Lazy Lester, Carey Bell, William Clarke, Lee Oskar, Billy Boy Arnold and Mark Hummel, all in live performances. 21 tracks.
