Paul Orta was a stupendous talent. He wrote great songs, sang in a voice with a wonderful vibrato and his harp tone was to kill for. I saw at a harmonica rumble with some great harp players. I remember him checking his amp's volume. He blew one note and it had the fattest tone I've ever heard. Of course, he played it when it was his turn. When he stepped to the mic for an acoustic number it was very evident that his tone came from deep inside. His amp just...well amplified it. Been re-listening to Shuffling with Lazy Lester after he passed. It ragged, but right and is tremendous. ---------- Ricky B http://www.bushdogblues.blogspot.com RIVER BOTTOM BLUES--crime novel for blues fans available at Amazon/B&N, iTunes, iBook THE DEVIL'S BLUES--ditto THE OAXACAN KID--available now HOWLING MOUNTAIN BLUES--Ditto too, now available

That is sad. Paul and his band the kingpins played for years next door to my gig at the black cat lounge in Austin. I never really got to know him very well. Both clubs were so packed you rarely got outside till you loaded out the gear. He was well connected and loved in Austin and a part of the Antones family.
