"LittleJoe- No love for Ringo?" - nacoran

Oh, Ringo was a fine drummer, probably the best rock drummer...and underappreciated. I just don't classify him in the same creative aspect as the rest of the FF.

Now for others: male voice Nat "King" Cole, female Ella Fitzgerald.
Piano: Art Tatum, Fatha Hines.
Sax: Sidney Bechet, Stan Getz.
Guitar: Chet Atkins

LittleJoe- I was actually going to say John, Paul and George but you beat me to the punch, so I chimed in for poor Ringo.

John, Paul, George
Chris Cornell
Lucinda Williams
Tori Amos
Eddie Vedder
Axl Rose
Kurt Cobain
Louis Armstrong
Bach
Fiona Apple
Tracy Chapman

Actually, some local people that I've met have probably influenced me as much as these people. Jen Abounader, Eric Erkkinen, my friend Jeff Jackson... and I'd like to thank the academy, wait, wrong speech.

My grandpa. That man had F-U-N-K! I said had because while he's living, he can't play mandolin anymore. He had this weird sense of timing. His powers of timing, I am convinced, was partially because of the weaker gravity of earth and the fact he drew musical power from earth's yellow sun.
Yes, his timing was like an atomic clock, but it wasn't just that he was in time, it was more like he WAS time and could warp the curtain of space/time in a musical riff. He hit a lot of blue notes, but it wasn't the notes, it was HOW he hit them. I've never been able to duplicate that funky timing of his.

He invented cross harp (at least as far as he was concerned) back in the 1950s. He carried a D Marine Band for tuning his guitar or fiddle or mandolin, or whatever he had at whatever time. As he drew on the E (1 draw) and it spilled over, he identified that -with his ear- as an A chord. He figured if it had an A chord, he could play in A. And he did.

A while back he was telling me that story and he says about the Marine Band "You know, they still make those."

1. Jason Ricci and the New Blood. I'd been asleep for years, this music shook me awake.

2. Adam Gussow. Coming from a music educator, I say he is a hero among music educators.

Music is your own experience, your own thoughts, your wisdom. If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn. They teach you there's a boundary line to music. But, man, there's no boundary line to art. - Charlie Parker

Phogi... at last. Adam. Hell yeah, Adam!

For me a hero is not only his abilities but how someone uses his abilites (i.e. for the good of others).

I wouldn't know of anybody else who I'd consider my music 'hero'. (In '...' because the term is IMO used in so many wrong ways...)
EDIT: but then I probably have a pretty peculiar definition of hero.

Nacoran:"Elk- Your grandpa isn't related to eHarp is he?"

I dunno. what planet did E-harp come from? ;)

I was thinking some more about g-pa's timing after I wrote that yesterday, much of what it was, I think, was going out of the beat momentarily. He'd hold a blue note beyond a beat, then play this syncopation of some weird triplets that lead him back. I can do a gpa Payne beat on one song, John Henry. It started out like that because I couldn't get in and out of the six overblow fast enough and that timing stuck in my version of the song. Grandpa, however, could do it with impunity.

As far as harp goes, it's Jason Ricci, but not because of the notes he plays. Partially, he's a hero of mine, because he is so accessible, but mostly its the resonance techniques he does with his hands. I never really sat down and studied his scales, or his overblowing, but I have studied his hands a great deal, there's a different hand position for just about every note. That's why his harmonica cries.
