Why would anyone buy Hohner MS reedplates?

You can buy a Big River for less money and get the same reedplates plus you'll have a complete new harp or if you don't play Big Rivers, at least some spare cover plates and combs.

Good point, but Hohner sells them because not everyone picks up on that.

People have this misconception the Big River sucks and the other MS are superior. This is false, of course, the suck is uniform. I always thought the Big River was BETTER than the others, because of the side vents. I used to make wood combs and put them on Big Rivers, back in the day.

I think Stickman is right. I seem to remember reading something along those lines. I think it might have been on Harponline.

I just e-mailed Hohner with the OP's question. Lets see what they say.

Why do all these threads turn into which harp is better, better, best? Don't we have enough threads like that?

"Why would anyone buy Hohner MS ?"

When you choices are limited in your local stores which don't carry Marine Bands and Special 20's in keys other than C.

And when ordering online is NOT an option.

In the USA, the only replacement reed plate set is the Cross Harp set, which is in fact, an upgrade and uses a thicker reed plate (1.05mm) than the standard plates used on the Big River/Pro Harp/MS Blues Harp (0.90mm). If you were to replace the cover plates of the MS Blues Harp with those of the BR, and change the engraving of the top cover plate, you`d have the long discontinued MS version of the Marine Band, which was only issued in Europe and almost universally unloved by most pros. I got to play a prototype that was sent around to a large number of pros and I found myself to be in agreement with big number of pros that it was a lousy replacement at the time for the real deal, and from the nearly unanimous negative reaction, they never issued it. However, on Hohner`s European website, they do sell the stock actual reed plate set as well as the Cross Harp reed plate set.

I think my favorite coverplate shape is the Big River--of course, I do have to re-work them--add a new wood or plexiglass comb--do a little reed work--then I find them to be good harps. As Jason Ricci once said in a YT video--the Honer harps are jsut raw materials--like buying lumber for a house--you gotta put some work into them.

I know that sucks when you're paying so much for a harp--but the carpenters are bitching about the price of lumber too. . .

The entire MS series was designed for players who liked different parts of different models to be used to basically self customize using easily interchangeable parts because no one instrument works for everyone.

The best wood comb available right now for the MS series is a beeswax sealed maple comb (and it's fully sealed and not partially sealed) by Mark Lavoie at about $18 apiece and you can check them out at http://www.middlebury.net/lavoie. He also makes a metal comb for them using titanium, and this is the best metal comb I've ever run across.

Yeah but Bob,
I play GM's all the time and in general they do all I ask (and I push it) they are comfortable for me and very playable as my style is fluid, its good why change...
back to ScottB's question why bother??

Scottb`s question is about the BR and the MS series and the GM has never been part of the MS series and part of the reason why is the shape of the cover plates. The GM are still part of the "hand made" series along with the MB and Sp20`s and so that isn`t really relevant to Scottb`s real question here. As I`ve already stated, the Cross Harp reed plate set, which costs more, is an upgrade over the set that the BR comes with.
