I bought a Marine Band harmonica in the key of G and a cheap ass holder about a month ago. I immediately knew I was going to get a new holder because I had to use sooooooo much force to pry the bastard open that it took two hands and two knees. Not knowing this could do any damage, I stuck the poor sucker in there.
After a few days I noticed the ridges that seperate the holes were beginning to protrude just slightly past the metal, the center one sticking out the most and the ends being the least. Then, one of the reeds went out. I decided to buck up and buy a $25 Lee Oskar holder thinking it would change things.
Today I got a new harmonica of the same model. Checked the wood parts to see how they were and the exact same thing was beginning to happen after only 20 minutes of being in this holder. I cant seem to find anything at all on this shit anywhere. I have two TOP quality products and neither are functioning correctly, even after exchanging and contrasting.
What the hell is this bullshit?

Holder? You mean a rack?
Sounds like the comb is swelling. If thats the case its not from the rack. ---------- The Art Teacher Formally Known As scstrickland

Saliva. The wood soaks up the moisture and swells. MB's are known for it. Many people seal the comb with mineral oil, butcher block oil, bees wax or about a hundred other things. Plastic comb harmonicas won't swell. I've heard people say if you let them dry the tines will shrink back into place and if not you can shave the excess off with a razor. There are probably 10 or more threads on this forum that deal will swelling combs and how to seal them and every member will have his or her own opinion on how to deal with it.
here check it out

To avoid the cramps that can get into your hands from prying those jaws of death grips apart on most racks, you could try a Dunlop Harp handle--they work prtty well for me. Here's a link:
