I used to use them years ago. If you got a good one it
played like butter but quality control was bad.
That was decades ago. They don't overblow that well
but that might have changed with time.

i love the starperformers love em there cheap and with a little work gapping embossing opening up the backs ect a few hours of fun tweaking you can make em play pretty good i have one in c that has been a very good harp better than some i got twice there price,But it aint as loud as the harps i have twice its price but it is a quick playing and tight as any i have. But again it has been modified the better harps i have i havent touched besides gapping im a nervous harp tweaker still

I have a silver tone deluxe in Bb that I keep in my fishing bucket. It's a nice playing harp, but like someone said, quality control is hit and miss.

The Huang line was the first to tune their diatonics to 19LJI, and their designs were actually pretty good, but often suffered from shoddy materials and/or shoddy workmanship. They've been doing the finishing here in the US for about the last 8 years rather than having it all done start to finish in China. The company was originally started by classical chromatic virtuoso and former head of R&D at Hohner Cham-Ber Huang, and his brother who later joined him, Frank Huang, who was also a harp tech at Hohner for many years. Cham-Ber Huang retired some years back and his brother Frank is running the business and I believe it was he who finally began to have to finishing work done in the USA.

I have used a lot of Star Performers, and used their Bac Pac harp too. They run good and bad like the others, I have purchased Specials 20s that didn't do so good, Marine Bands too. But over all the Star Performer is really good for its price. I was disappointed by the "Jazz" harp Haung made... Over all for the price I prefer Delta Frost and Bluesmasters

The Jazz Harp was essentially a country tuned harp, but with two major differences: a.) wheras in a country tuned harp, only 5 draw was raised 1/2 step sharp, 9 draw was also and b.) they were tuned to equal temperament.

Bob, do you know what exactly is done to Huang harps once they get here in the States? And where do they do it (ie. do they have a us factory somewhere?). I'm mainly just curious....

The actual factory is in China, but the finishing work gets done at their US headquarters in Farmingdale, LI, NY. I`m not positive about the exact details but I do know it`s supervised by Frank Huang himself.

I only play Huangs anymore, and not just because they're the only harps I can reasonably afford. The Silvertones are fantastic little harps if you get a good one (About seven out of ten are good ones.) I prefer the Star Performers, though; they play better, have bettr sound, take to a customization much more nicely, can overblow, and those suckers can take the beating only a, overenthusiastic beginner (read: me) can toss at 'em. Only downside is that when you get a bad STar Performer (one in thirteen by my count so far) you get a truly horrendous harmonica. Utterly unplayable.

Certain little details stick out about the workmanship, like inconsistancy from one S.P. to the next as to how the coverplates get secured, but all in all they really are great harps, especially if you sit down with 'em for a couple hours and tweak 'em.
