Just a quickie. I know a few people on this forum own epiphone valve jrs and I have recently bought a head and cab. I seem to be getting into tube amps and have recently modded a Gretsch G5222 ( look at my channel on youtube if you wanna hear it. Channel name Mcdookus) for harp. I like the sound of the vjr but fancy modding it. So I would like to know if anyone on this forum done the lonewolf mods to their epi vjr and I'd like to know their opinion of the sound post mod.

My advice is to go to the Lone Wolf harmonica forum and look for a guy called Arnenym. He has done 100's of mods to the Epi VJ.

Cheers Nasty. The problem is the price of tranny's. The components to mod an amp cost pennies which is why I'll go this route first. I have thought about changing the O/T on my Gretsch ( which is the same circuit as the champ 600. Even made in the same factory) I'll have a go at the lonewolf mods and take it from there

Hi Luke, Just thought I would let you I have no email at the mo as my pc has gone t**s up again. Dont know how long before I am back up again. I have lost all my email contacts so I will let you know when I am alive again. I had loads of vids to up load Paul Lamb, Mean Red Spiders, West Weston. Man technology sucks when it goes wrong.

Luke Juke If you are in the U.K., Nigel at Alnicomagnet does many mod. kits for the Epi. I have a Harley Benton GA5 (same as an Epi but £50 cheaper). I fitted his "Brownface" tone control (£11.99) and this has really added some bottom to the sound. If you are in the U.S. Randy at Lonewolf is your man. When looking for mods for my amp I contacted both of these guys and both were very helpful.

I started with alnicomagnet's mods on the g5222 before experimenting with other mods so I've bought his cd rom about the vjr. I think I'll just do a Princeton style treble cut tone control on the vjr and I've just joined the lonewolf forum. Cant believe I haven't looked at it before. Looks like there's alot of knowledgable amp tinkerers on there. I only bought a harmonica to learn a couple of campfire tunes and here I am three years later, a total addict, listening to j ricci full blast, customizing my own harps and now armed and dangerous with a soldering iron!!! Where will it end?

Hi Luke- I'm one of the moderators over at the Lone Wolf forum, so welcome there too... I look in over here from time to time but haven't posted much. I can tell you Randy from Lone Wolf Blues Company's mods are tried and tested, and not too hard to do. As to where it ends? 5 years ago I started building my first amp, and I've now got 6 amps, only one of which was made by someone else...If I spent as much time with a harp as I did with a soldering iron I might even get good.

Pleased to meet you Bruce. You'll probably be hearing from me next week when my amps died and my fingers are blistered and burnt . . . . . And if you don't hear from then I've probably not drained the caps. LOL

@Bruce Did anyone make sure the input transformer is laid out to stand the 40uf cap in the power supply? I guess it's less problematic than if it was the first filter cap being increased, but there's no doubt the input transformer has to stand slightly higher current than with the original 22uf. When i modded my EVJr i thought about flter caps too, but resisted to change them after a quck look at the whimpy transformer.

Luke, I'll ask them to keep a space free for you on our burns unit! I'm in the UK so if you need some extra help get in contact. Pimpinella, the power transformer can easily stand a 40-47uF filter cap as the first or second filter cap. Big filter caps can be a problem especially with amps with tube rectifiers, but it's less of a problem with a SS rectifier. I built a 5F1 Champ using a broken Champ 600's parts and put 100uF filter caps in. 47uF is big enough for most SS rectified amps, and typically gives you an amp with more bass response and less backgound hum.

Hi Bruce. I've managed to source most of the parts but I'm having trouble with the .003 cap for the tone control. Any ideas where to buy one from???

Luke, you might find a 0.0033 cap(3300 pF, which is close enough)from Maplin, if you have a local branch: http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=98159 If I've got to get a lot of bits, I do so by mail order from Rapid Elelctronics. They have high voltage caps, and even carry valves (tubes)
