That is my opinion....what about performance, generating jumpin' joy when you play....lets have some more about that..not what hat or dark glasses or what mic or amp,or maybe you are still in the bedroom?? Lets get out there..the young people love the harp but they have not heard it..they love it..

"Lets get out there.." That's what we're trying to do with HPC3. The more stuff we can get onto YouTube, then hopefully the more interest we can generate. Are you in then? ----------

Tooka - I'm not knocking HPC3, but youtube is a million miles from connecting with other musicians in person. I think that was the point Nick was trying to make

My theory on music is to simply let it unfold as it wants. I have been doing this for over 4 decades without a lesson, or any knowledge of theory. My way of learning is to turn off the brain, and let the soul work. The soul is the greatest teacher and what it can't convey to your body, it will lead you to people in the flesh to learn it from. The soul is the musician and the brain the manager. Managers are about wordly things and acceptance concerns. The soul is about expressing what is in it, without any worldly concerns. Nick, sometimes I feel the way that you do. But, there is nothing much that can be done about it. I just keep an eye open and see whether something pops up that takes my interest.
I would love to see more threads that really help contribute to playing - as opposed to the aquisition of gear - in the priceless way that some of the pros' vids do.
However, I've come to realise that this has become a chat room as much as it is a forum for exchanging and imparting information. There's nothing especially wrong with that; it just won't be to everyone's taste.
Good luck with the new band. Post some vids, if possible. ---------- YouTube SlimHarpMick

Jon dont mess about , there has to be some music scene in your vicinity, maybe there's plenty who are in the same position as you! Take the plunge, you dont have to play the first time but check the scene man..you may be pleasantly surprised. I meet guys at the back of the audience at open mics who are coming out and I try to encourage them because out there lies a brave new world and once you are in it..you will never, ever look back, trust me

Same with Jon but I loved playing on stage with our harp club in December. Though that was different everyone playing was a harp player & a harp player brought the band. Guess that's kinda cheating. Like Jon I think any jam is at least an hour from me. Philly's at least an hour from where I work & Lancaster is an hour from where I live. I'm not sure any of the guys in our club go to jams or Id ask them where's good. I agree though, jamming like that is such a rush & fun & all the audience is cheering and all of a sudden techniques, what harp, etc are gone from your mind.

I love to post things i wrote 80 songs last year and put harp on half but some are mistaks included,I sometimes feel like maybe im being out of line or pushy im really a shy person in public with the stuff i post, but i love hearing other people play where in there bedroom or live its a advantage us older musicians didnt have the easy access to giving and receiving personal music and songs in the past i love it

From a newbies point of view :
Alot of the recent posts have gone completely over my head, especially regarding amps, mics etc etc, but then on any forum you'll get posts like that. I'm a mod on a car forum, been regular for years, and i still don't understand half of the mechanical posts :o)
I guess when you have a forum like this one, in that nothing is seperated out, your going to get blocks of certain posts depending on what the current topic is, but i quite like dipping in and out, checking out the vids that people put up, giving me hope that one day, if i put in the practice, i might be able to play like that.
I still think, from a ' person new to harmonicas ' point of view, that's it's a forum with a whole host of info. Maybe one day more of it will make sense to me :o)

@Harmonicanick, like Mick said, good luck with the band and you must post some vids when you get going.
A lot of us (well, I'm sure I'm not the only one) play harp just for recreational purposes. You never know it may blossom and turn into something more serious. It's nice to be able to get our stuff out there now that sites like YouTube make that possible, and the little bit of exposure and playing experience may stand us in good stead should we decide to go to a jam.
You never know the next Susan Boyle of the harp world could be an MBH member playing on YouTube. Heaven forbid. ----------

Hey Nick, get the party started. Post a vid of your band or start a music related topic. Show us how you practice or teach us a cool riff. This forum changes like the tide. some weeks all you hear about is amps. others are about woodshedding. others about the music members love or hate. The bottom lime is if you feel it is time for a change then YOU are the perfect person to make it happen.

@Nick: I dig what you're saying, man, but at the same time, I really enjoy the technical stuff. I don't understand 99% of it, but it gives me new ideas as to where I need to build my knowledge, ESPECIALLY in terms of mics and amps. I patently do not speak Electric-ese, so coming on here and reading all these posts gives me countless Google-based learning opportunities.
Also, best of luck with the band, mate!

'The public get what the public want' If someone posts something that no-one is interested in then it quickly gets sucked into the oblivion of page 2. When I first came onto this forum, I owned a Blues Harp thinking that'd make me play blues cos it said blues on it. I was a complete beginner but through some of the technical posts I have learnt what makes a good harp amp, what makes a good mic, things to look for. Reed work, embossing, sanding combs flat 7limit intonation, et tuning etc, and a whole host of other things. The tech things used to go way over my head but now I understand so much more than I used to and has made me want to learn more. I take from the techie posts what I need to know. If there's a post that doesn't help or interest me then I dont take anything from it. I also think its great that there is a community on this forum with alot of regular posters and it's always good to read what they've been upto or even whats on there mind. I love this forum. Techie posts an'all.

All is not lost. I just ordered a USB mp3 player from Amazon with a microphone in it, so on April 2nd, my 50th birthday and my 2nd anniversary of harp-noodling, I can subject your ears to the punishment they've been crying out for (the safety word is banana)! So German harpist, keep your eyes open, because I haven't a clue how to upload anything (except by attaching it to an email to Adam, which might not start his day off too well) ---------- Kinda hot in these rhinos!

You don't need to go to a jam to get your feet wet. Find a friend who plays guitar and just jam together.Woodshedding is a fine and necessary thing, but playing with other musicians is a must if you want to get really good at harp.

there are some boards with less technical stuff and tend to gear towards mentoring new players a bit more. The bushman harmonica forum is one with a lot of guys that will write an essay for every beginner question that is put out.
