I know a few basic pointers. But I'm not sure they are correct. So far its just been learning as I go. I'd like to play my harp into the same mic I'm singing into. I've been working on it all day, its slowly getting better. But I thought I should ask: how do you approach playing into a vocal mic?

Do you have the mic and harp in your hand or is on a mic stand? If it is on a stand, the closer you get the deeper the tone and if you cup(hold the mic) it will get deeper and acts like if you were playing through an amp only usually less distorted. I sing and play harp with the same mic. It is on a boom stand and I rarely cup it. It is generally a few inches off the mic - just like in the picture below. I use a harp rack 95% of the time because my hands are tied up with the guitar. When I do hold the harp in my hands, I move closer and further from the mic in conjunction with hand muting stuff. You can get real creative with the dynamics and tones you can get doing this. Watch a sonny boy williamson video on youtube. He is a master of play with hands and off a mic. If you are playing with a band, the band has to play quiet or you will be squashed like a bug on windshield. I do this in church all the time...today in fact. I let the sound guy do his job and simply cup the mic with my harp if I want a more horn-like tone. For harmonica tone, I may leave it on the mic stand and just play into it without cupping. Today I played an E harp in 1st position after a key change and the director thought the flute was playing at first. You can vary the tone a lot and higher keyed harps sound totally different than low ones. In that particular song, i played a D marine band in first position on chords, melody and some harmony for the first half of the song. I switched to straight melody and single note fill licks on the Special 20 E harp after the key change to the end of the song. Totally different sounds, due to using the upper end of the E harp and the lower/middle of the D harp. No singing that time and I cupped for the whole song. Practice to get the sounds you want.
