Hi,
Has everybody found a way to securely install a screw on connector (Switchcraft 2501F) to a cable? They have no stress relief so all the stress is put onto the shield and hot lead. Therefore the wires break or come lose from time to time. I have switched to the screw on/phone plug adapters (Switchcraft 332A) lately to avoid this but I wonder if anybody knows a way to use the screw on connectors trouble free.
thx BF

Greg Heumann among others knows how to make this cables more reliable.
I think Greg sells his cables. So it may be an idea to email him or look on his website for the cost. It's www.blowsmeaway.com

Thanks!!! I just found the following note on that site: "I shrinkwrap both connectors to the cable for extra strain relief; on screw-on connectors I go so far as to glue the shrinkwrap to the cable and connector to prevent the cable from spinning within the connector - which is the usual cause of failure."
That might be worth a try.
all the best BF

Hi, Bluefinger
Yeah, the 2501F spring is a pretty worthless strain relief by itself. Having made dozens if not hundreds of these, and using ones I make, I have learned a lot. I take many steps to prolong the life of the cable - including customer education - and my cables have an extremely low failure rate. ---------- /Greg

There is commercial grade shrink tubing with glue inside I have used for electret headset mics. I found it at the local truck repair shop. I think 3m makes it. It comes off hard so be sure you're ready to shrink wrap before you do it....not impossible to remove, but quite a pain.

After making up my screw on cables I either use shrink wrap or electrical tape on the outside as well. It's a trick I learnt from seeing pictures of Rod Piazza. It seems to work very well in my experience.

The glue in the 3m tubing is very stout and should keep it from rotating if you can find a diameter large enough..it's pretty pricey though..i never looked for any that big. Mine went around a little electret element to keep it from rotating on a piece of 12 gauge copper wire for the headset. Works great.

Hi Blue-f Ya got to give it go for ya self like our Bro's that have offerd help,,i got to do for myself Downunder land,,so whats working for me i solder the sheild to the spring as you do,,first i unmate the weaved sheild wire form the wires in a wide flate ribbon,,i slide it throught the spring retainer down a few threads of the spring enough so it will come out just above the retainer screw hole,,after doing this you will have to tidy up the wires a bit reform it in a flet ribbon again if you have messed it up,,i trim the wire to size then fold it down so it goes past the retainer screw hole then i solder it to the retainer spring not to much solder no big lumpy thingy so it's forms to the curve of the spring it's got to be neat not much room to play with,,i place the solderd part of the wire under the spring retainer screw so when i screw it in it will push against the solderd wire,,But befor i do this i cut a shim of thin Brass to size so it slips in between the solderd wire and the body,,short enough when you slide the hole lot in brass shim and solderd wire should no the visable or it could cut your hand placed it all under the spring retainer screw,,screw in the retainer screw so it all crimps the shim against wire and cable,,Ok all that said this is what works for me,,If any other Brothers do it a Different way give us some more info the more the merryer..Ok DIY Bro's give it a go..Ive had no complaints yet
