Well, my harp pro knowledge is extremely limited. I just plain ole dont listen to that much of it to comment on a top 5... sad, I know.

I think it is more interesting to ask, which harp players do you listen to most. And that is a cross between what kind of blues appeals to you and who plays that kind of blues well (at least the way you hear it)....and my answer is James Cotton, Junior Wells, Kim Wilson, Rick Estrin, Little Walter (not in any order).

Innovation is great and necessary for a living blues, but it isn't all better music to me. That's the nature of innovation.

Yeah I know I don't play out that much anymore.
It's ok. Old harmonica players don't die
they just blow away.

MODERN masters? That sort leaves out the deceased players. If you are referring to players with a modern sound then I think:

Adam Gussow
Howard Levi
Jason Ricci
Jimi Lee
Lee Oskar
John Popper (hey, he doesn't sound like anyone else)
Harper
Rick "Harvard" Beets

All of these guys are innovative.
