One of the harmonicas I like to play from time to time is Golden Melody's, but a few of them are constantly catching my facial hair and not willing to let go (any of you that have had this happen knows how painfull that can be). The trouble spot is where the cover plate, comb, and reed plate meet on the hole # 1 end. Do any of you with facial hair that plays GM's have the same trouble? Also any ideas to prevent this from continueing? OOHHH yes the screws are tight and no I am not shaving off my goatee. Thanks

Make sure the cover is in the groove on the plate and screw down. The screwing down tight part can make it more airtight.

This only happens sometimes to me, so rarely that I don't think anything of it. Never happens on SP20s, Bluesmasters etc though.

I've never had that problem with a GM. Lee Oskars get me all the time. I know this sounds savage, but the next time it happens, yank it away really hard. If you are lucky it will pull the hair out. When you regain consciousness you can see the exact spot that is catching!
I try to keep my 'stache trimmed so that the longest hairs don't go down over my mouth. That helps a little. You could maybe try a little sanding if it's snagging, or maybe some wax to fill the gap if it's catching.

Outside of shaving it off, the only real way to prevent facial hair from getting caught, from experience of having one, is to keep it NEATLY trimmed and groomed at all times and the minute you let it get to being a bushy, sloppy mess, the hairs will always get caught, especially with a chromatic if you use the slide a lot. ---------- Sincerely, Barbeque Bob Maglinte Boston, MA http://www.barbequebob.com CD available at http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/bbmaglinte

Another good technique is to cover your mustache with duct tape very thoroughly before playing the harmonica. Really rub it on well. Then, at the end of the night, rip the duct tape off. Now, I can't stress this enough, make sure to consume lots of alcohol before you do this. Either consume enough to numb yourself to the pain, or enough to dissolve the adhesive in the duct tape. Make sure you have something to bite down on.
BBQ- Don't even get me started on chroms and facial hair! Although I have discovered that it's easier to get unstuck on a chromatic. Usually, just sliding the slide back to the opposite position from where it snagged you will release you.
Anyone ever snag neck whiskers on seat belts?

iv been keepin my stash real short for awhile now sense i started playing. i got sick of it gettin caught. my biggest fear though when i first got a chromatic was that i would cut off the tip of my tongue with the slide. lol but then i realized it dosnt even come close. ----------

Actually what prompted me to ask the question about GM's and facial hair was because I do keep my wiskers trimmed and one did get caught and ripped out. After the immediate pain and desire to smash the harp into oblivion passed, I put it away, with the hair still stuck in it. Last night I took it back out and looked where the problam spot was. I think I had the bolts too tight and caused a little rising of the cover in one spot. I took the coverplate off, got rid of the hair, put the cover plates back on but only snugged up the bolts instead of cranking on them. I have not had any problams since. Hopefully that will be the end of it.

Happy first post RWS. If you sew the holes in your pockets you won't have that problem. You can also use my duct tape method.
