Splittin' at the Seams
This will be up for only a couple of days. I am playing in 3rd and using a Micro POG with some crazy settings.
I am calling this modern (edited from "innovative) as it is not straight blues, not a typical use of 3rd position, there is some crazy effect useage, it isn't typical harp phrasing...maybe it sucks, I don't know. ---------- Mike Fugazzi http://www.myspace.com/niterailband http://www.youtube.com/user/NiteRail http://www.twitter.com/NiteRail http://www.facebook.com/mike.fugazzi

I'm listening to it now, and I think it's pretty cool, but for some reason I'm not feeling it totally. It's as if it doesn't fit into the song. It sounds like you're playing slow, which is cool at some points, but there are some points where I could feel some staccato or something. It sounds good, though, I have to say that.

Some nice sounds there! Some of those effects reminded me of Zeppelin's No Quarter, nice and spacey in parts :)
Liked the guitar playing too! Is that your own? Sweet tone :)

Hmmm.... I don't know where to start.
This is recorded very well but...
I hate the sound of the drums...too loose for this type of tune.
The bassist has NO groove at all and in general makes everything drag.
I like the effects but what I don't like when harp players use effects, they still throw in those harmonica specific slurs and to my ears it ruins the effect and I'm reminded that I'm listening to a harmonica rather than being transported to a different sonic space.

This is the rough mix and sort of an outlier on the album...last song and a total departure from the rest of the songs and supposed to be out sounding. It is the most heavy solo song we recorded.
Thanks for the feedback. ---------- Mike Fugazzi http://www.myspace.com/niterailband http://www.youtube.com/user/NiteRail http://www.twitter.com/NiteRail http://www.facebook.com/mike.fugazzi

Chris hit it head on for me, sometimes the harmonica is obviously a harmonica, which sounds strange to say, but it messes it up occasionally. It is good, though, I thought.

I think at some points it has a typical harmonica note movemnent.Other times its sound like a synth. That being said I don't think the general public would know it's a harmonica. It's a sound I think that you should explore. I think It sounded cool.
The snare for some reason felt out place is the sound of the whole recording. I don't know if it's tuned too low or if the snare is too loose. This is all subjective so it could all just be my taste.
Please keep putting stuff up this is the best part of the list.

I should have used the term modern instead of innovative as what I thought was most out of the box was that I used the POG like a synth (The harp was done all in the first take and live. I was stomping in the POG on and off...it was hard trading licks live with myself and remembering to hit the pedal)...and not really the harp playing, but I did think it was a bit different to play third and play it in more of a second position style and not play third position blues riffs...so it sounds like harmonica, but not third position traditional blues harp.
Does that make sense? I played a lot of third on the CD. Some of it was more funk based and some of it was meant to be jazzier...on one it has a real John Popper feel (but was that style in 3rd whereas most of his stuff is based in 2nd). I think I am better at 3rd than any other position.

Ok, I should probably not be posting this stuff...so last one until they are finished being mixed and streaming instead of downloading...
Third Position Tune
Again, modern blues would be a better word choice...this is a little jazzier as I am working a lot off of the 7, 9, and 11th. The run up at the end of the solo has a 6ob that I think is near impossible to tell...it was not doctored.
In my band, I am supposed to sound a bit like a harmonica, so I am ok with that...I get away with a lot more live. Adding the keyboard player sorta shifted my mind set. ---------- Mike Fugazzi http://www.myspace.com/niterailband http://www.youtube.com/user/NiteRail http://www.twitter.com/NiteRail http://www.facebook.com/mike.fugazzi

I agree with all that Buddha said except one thing. The bass needs funk lessons for this song and the drum needs much tighter, almost should be played on a tightly controlled high hat instead. The thing he said about letting harp sound come through does not agree with me. If you just want effects, play a programmable keyboard with a tone slider. Then you can get more chords, and almost no characteristics of the actual instrument. It is nice to have a bit of the character of the instrument. Of course this is just my opinion and I do like what I have heard of Chris's recordings as well.
