FYI - David Barrett recently sent out an email stating that this year's Harmonica Masterclass Workshop will be the last large one that he will produce.
----- Last Large Harmonica Masterclass Workshop! San Jose, California - May 21-23, 2010
I've been producing and teaching Harmonica Masterclass Workshops around the words for almost 20 years... CA, TX, FL, NY, NJ, HI, Japan, Germany... giving students the opportunity to work with the best blues harmonica instructors and artists in the world.
All good things must come to an end... the upcoming class will be the last large Harmonica Masterclass Workshop. If you haven't been to one, this is your last chance. It really is an amazing experience... look at the 100's of testimonials to that fact on the website.
Classes Offered: Tongue Blocking; Bending; Performance Training (with a band!); Improvising; Rhythm, Phrasing & Skills Assessment; and Artist Studies of: Rice Miller, Jimmy Reed, Big Walter Horton and Paul Butterfield. Don't miss this chance to have hands-on training with the best instructors in the world!
The staff and I look forward to working with you soon!

I wonder why he's now deciding to call it quits. Maybe he's decided to throw all his energy into his new instructional website. That's too bad, I wish it was within my means to attend this last masterclass.

I wouldn't be surprised if it came down to two things, actual attendance and the costs involved in putting these things together getting prohibitively more expensive. ---------- Sincerely, Barbeque Bob Maglinte Boston, MA http://www.barbequebob.com CD available at http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/bbmaglinte

Yeah is overhead had to be quite a bit. Going online might make him less, but his overhead would be much lower. Regardless, he's a great guy! ---------- Mike Fugazzi http://www.myspace.com/niterailband http://www.youtube.com/user/NiteRail http://www.twitter.com/NiteRail http://www.facebook.com/mike.fugazzi

Bob - The harp fanatics really turn out for the Masterclass and Hummel's Blowouts.
I've talked to a few friends of mine that have been attendees, vendors or players at these events. They've said that there are a large number of harp players attending this event.
Additionally, I've noticed that the attendance in the clubs changes while these sessions are going on. The number of harp players at the jams tend to increase the weeks following the Masterclass event.
I frequently run into one of the guys that works with David on these events. If I see him, I'll ask him.
I suspect that a person would get much more out of a series of on-demand web lessons than two or three days of intense instructor-led training. Plus, the web experience allows the content to be delivered globally than to a few that have the money to attend "the big event".

I was at the 2008 class and got a lot out of it. Quite a bit of it was over my head as well as my skill level at the time, but I played a few licks for my wife when I got home (NO WISE CRACKS!) and she could immediately hear the difference, and musically inclined she is not.
I can't afford to even think about going this year, but would if the money was there. When I went I figured that the weekend cost me in the neighborhood of $900 (room, class, transportation costs).
But if I had a high speed connection here at home I would enroll in the online classwork.
All that... I just gave myself the blues.. ;-)
