Hi Russ, Be interested to know what camcorder you use. I'm looking into getting one myself and the choice is daunting. Thanks for the vids. ----------

Hi I use an old Sonny Handy cam Model DCR-PC101E
I have had this for several years and cost loads when I first got it but you can pick them up on Ebay for about £100+ these days. The thing to remember is you dont have to spend loads on them.
If you are just going to use it for yourself. eg family pics, gigs for posting on YT then dont buy a new one.
I would always consider the following.
do you need High Def - No do you need the latest gagets on board - No what Format to use - Mini DV tapes are the best quality and are pretty cheap to bye.I never record over the tapes though.
For the quality I get from my vids I just find a good recordng point not too close and just point and record with the stage in frame and thats it. I always use the mini DV format as you can get some really high quality settings. I use windows movie maker to convert the vids to a decent size ie less than 100MB for YT without too much loss of quality in the picture. The sound pick on my camera is really good for picking out the higher frequency's for harp.
You will need a firewire cable and connection on your PC or get a firewire PCI card for about £10 if you dont have one.
Thats it.
Pick one up on ebay that someone one wants to sell that has not had too much use. Always ask them what it was used for and the answer is, I took it on holiday afew times and recorded some tapes of the kids in the Garden etc (you get the picture) and thats the one I would go for.
Dont buy a repaired one. Dont buy if you dont get the answers you are after and go with your gut feeling.
If you find one you like then send me an Email and I will check it out for you.(russ.turner@ntlworld.com)
Do some research first or you will end up buying the first one you like.
Hope this helps

Thanks Russ, I'd already ruled out HD. I don't want all the bells and whistles just a reasonable Zoom and the ability to get close ups and if poss time lapse and decent sound. I've been researching for the past two weeks and just end up bamboozled. Thanks for the tips, I hadn't even considered eBay. ----------

rharley...I use a "Dazzle" from Pinnacle..you just plug your Camcorder into it and connect it to the pc.
