How do you cover the cutouts on the sides (Manji) while cupping for maximum muting? I am noticing that when I play my special 20 I can cup and get a maximum seal but with a harp like the manji with cutouts the sound escapes from the sides and I cant figure out if there is a way to cover those holes or not?
I also find while playing with a mic that not covering the cutouts definitely gives a brighter tone.
Am I missing something or did anyone else notice this as well? Thanks for the advise. 528hemi

insted of cupping it like round you gotta swivel your hand like your putting your two palms together. ----------

Well just sitting here now I am able to figure out the right hand...using my pointing finger I can cover the right side of the harp and feels OK but srill having issues with the left side(1 hole side)
Jon, Are you saying the harp should be between the base of the first fingers and palms together on the bottom almost like praying? I usually hold the harp thump on bottom and poiiting finger across the top in the left hand

Or do you mean to swivel the left hand at the base so the pointing finger is not parellel across the top and the base moves inward to cover that cutout? That seems to work but I never seen it explained below.

ya you got it. if you have it like that the skin between your thumb an index should cover the hole by the 1 hole. if not just push that harp into it like your reaching your fingers farther across the harp. ----------

ya you want it like your praying, but curl the fingers of the right hand over the harp to cover the vent on the right side. ----------

Yup I think I got it..Now to get use to that...With the SP20 I dont even need to think about it.
Not sure I am liking the cutout but seems to add to either the brightness or maybe just adds some loudness. I am going to put tape over it and see what it changes. Just curius.

This is why I don't play harps with side vents. ---------- /Greg
