Rick davis raves about the eminence lady luck 12" speaker and I'd trust his judgement. An alternative would be the weber sig12 with harp dust cap. I'll be interested in other people's choices on a 12 inch speaker as I'm thinking of getting one myself

at the risk of being redundant Eminence 12" Lady Luck is by far the best 12" for harp ----------

You all prefer the Alnico's or the Ceramics?

Joe, in amps with smaller multiple speakers I prefer a combo 2 + 2 of each ----------

Interesting, Bluzdude... I've got a 12" original Jensen ceramic in a '62 Ampeg Reverb-o-rocket. I thought about a replacement and wondered about switching to anlico for a little more bite in the mids and upper tones. Am I on the right track with that analogy?

So what is the sweet speaker combo for harp? I have a Bogan Challanger, but no speaker cab. Some say to use a 10 and a 12. How about an 8 and a 10? I don't remember anything about this being discussed much here.

I put an Eminence Cannabis Rex in a 6L6SE amp (about 10-12 watts)--thought it would just be temporary (I thought I'd put a pair of 8" in it someday, but I've been too lazy to make another baffle), but I like the sound of it so much it's still there. Admittedly, it's the only 12" I've tried--my other amps are 10" or 8". Maybe I'll try a Lady Luck in it someday since I already have the 12" baffle.

Yep, the Eminence Cannabis Rex is a great sounding speaker for blues harp. It gets my top recommendation among 12-inch speakers. I have it in my 10-watt Mission 5F2H amp, which is my regular gig rig. I plan to offer it as the standard speaker in the new harp amp I'm developing with Bruce Collins at Mission Amps.
Other Eminence Patriot Series speakers also sound very good.
I have not had good luck with 12-inch speakers from Weber... too much cone cry and ghost noting. Their 10-inch speakers are very good, however.
MrDon46, the only Lady Luck speakers I've seen are 16 ohms, so be aware they may not work in your amp.

Luke, I tried the Weber Sig 12 and it had the worst ghost notes I've ever heard, when playing a 2-draw bend on an A or Bb harp. I returned several of these speakers to Ted (back when he was alive) and he sent new ones, which had the same problem. I had to give up on them. BUT... I know other players who have had good luck with those speakers. I can't explain it. ---------- -Rick Davis Blues Harp Amps Blog Roadhouse Joe Blues Band

Rick, thanks for the heads up on the Lady Luck impedance--I'd checked ebay, only ones I could find there are 16 ohm, I suspect that's all they make. BTW, if you like the Cannabis Rex, you should try their Lil Buddy (10" hemp cone). I have one paired with a 10A125-O in a 2X10 combo (Super-based), I think it's just about the perfect combination for that amp.

I have had a lot of cone cry problems with the Weber 12" speakers as well. Especially the 12A150-A. The 12F150 I am using in a Pro Junior is fine tho. I also agree on the 10" speakers. The 10A125s I have in my Super are exceptionally good! One thing I have noticed with the Webers is that they aren't very efficient. Most of them sound great but whenever I swapped speakers in an amp, the Webers produced the lowest volume. This can be good or bad, depending on what you want ... I'm just saying.
How efficient are the Eminence speakers?
Any Eminence recommendations for 10 and 8 inch harp speakers?
Edit: I guess they don't offer any 8" models.

Bluefinger- The Eminence Cannabis Rex is very efficient: 102 dbl @ 1 watt/1 meter across its usable frequency spectrum. That is loud. It is a ceramic speaker with a hemp cone. It is described as "clean" but don't let that scare you off. It is warm and lively, but well controlled. It never gets over-the-top rasty.
I'll put up a vid of the Rex speaker in my Mission Amps 5F2H soon. I think it sounds great.
The 12-inch webers I tried were the 12A125O, 12A15O, and Signature series in both alnico and ceramic. That all had ghost notes. I didn't try the vintage ceramic (12F).
I haven't tried many 10-inch Eminence speakers for harp, but I like the Lil' Buddy a lot. Mike "Wezo" Wesolowski raves about the RamRod, and he ceratinly knows harp tone. ---------- -Rick Davis Blues Harp Amps Blog Roadhouse Joe Blues Band

Tuckster I love the Em Lady Luck I use it with My Bogen and with the Epi VJr. Just make sure you set the ohm lug for 16 ohm or link a pair of them under 8 ohm
Mr Don, it's not hard to wire the 16 ohm lug on a transformer
Joe, Sometimes the Alnico's have a bit too much bite and will give you a lower feedback tolerance then you are used to. It doesn't take much to set off a feedback loop. I think that's why some of the boutique guys started mixing the speaker combinations, kinda covering all your bases type thing. But hell it works.
It's so much easier for guitarists, you basically drive it hard enough that it sounds good. Their trick is getting good tone playing softly. It's a backwards world we live in I tell you! ----------

Thanks,Bluzdude. I know the speakers they rave about for guitar are not very suitable for harp. Sounds like the Lady Luck is a winner.

I know it's kinda simplified but the very first rule you must consider is good for guitar, bad for harp. If you spent time on the Epiphone VJr disc board (where I learned an awful lot on how to mod these amps) All you heard was guitarists moan about how these speakers were "too farty" and better cabs to use with their modded versions (which suck for Harp BTW)It turns out that Farty (early break up) tends to lend itself to the type of warm smoother distortion that we Harp players like. Terms used by guitarists that should warn us away are "lots of Headroom" meaning we may use whatever mic we want it'll never break nicely for us. "tone stack" the highs will climb right to feedback level. The sweet thing about these speakers is they really start to break in and sound even nicer after about 30 hours of use ----------

@Bluefinger - How did you fit a 12" speaker in a Pro Jr cab?

@JoeL
sorry for the late reply, hope you still read this:
I dumped the original cab and used a 12" Champ cab that is available from TAD. Basically this is a Tweed Deluxe cab with a narrower cutout which is just right for the ProJr. I had to make a metal cover vor the chassis because the back panel does nor cover all of it but that was not a big deal. I intended to use it for guitar at small gigs and it works great but with a 12AU7 in the first stage and a 12AT7 for the PI it produces a really nice and dirty harp tone. The Weber 12F150 is fine as well but a little more efficiency would be nice.
