Hi...I just posted 3 blues videos on YouTube and wanted to see what you think. My back up band is a Karaoke background music track. I'm playing through a Shure Green Bullet Microphone, tube pre-amp, Boss Digital Delay and a Fender Blues Jr. with modified tubes.
You can go to YouTube and search for Gary D. Hughes or I will also post the links below. Thanks for your feedback.
By the way, all you have to do to embed a YouTube video is look for the little box on the page that says 'embed' and copy the text in the box into your post. A lot more people will comment on your video when you embed it. :)
You have a good voice, good enough to front a blues band. Join or form one with a good bunch, and the harp will take care of itself in the mix and be part of the whole, not over the top a bit as in this video.
Harmonica enhances or as someone said 'its the pockets between the sounds that matter'
Thanks harmonicanick! I am in the process of putting together a blues band. I agree the harmonica is a little over the top in those videos. There is also too much hall reverb on my voice. I just bought the PA system a few weeks ago and I'm still learning how to dial it in.
Only watched born under a bad sign and in my opinion the main thing that jumps out at me with the harp is that you play alot of straight 3 draws and 2 blows. Listen to the backing chords which have a bluesy feel because of the 7ths and replace your straight 3 draws with 3 draws bent by a half step and your 2 blow with the 2 draw whole step bend. The tones of the blues scale are perfect for that song. Those major tones don't really fit. ---------- "You will never get every possible thing out of an instrument, but the instrument will get every possible thing out of you" - Ray Charles.
Hi Sam I watched all the vids. I would go easy on the delay as its a bit too much ,and it takes a lot of volume out ,and lose the edge on the tone . I used a blues JR from a friend on some recordings and they work best with hardly any effects ,just a bit of drive and a little slap back delay if needed , try and learn some vibrato if you can ,It'll take a while but i think it needs it for the long draw notes . meanwhile keep up the good work and you have a good presence at the mic ( vocals ) what PA are you using ? best advice for playing or getting a band with harp is to make sure your voice and harp cut through , and not get swamped out by loud drummers with bIn lid cymbals and guiatirst with fizzy disortion to upset the mix.
