If you leave your reedplates soaking in some household cleaners like Cillit BANG and KaBOOM and possibly others they will turn black if you leave them in for too long.
If you want to get them back to the brass colour, soak them in Ammonia for a while. It doesn't get them back to looking like new but it's deffinately an improvement on the black tarnished colour.
Be careful with the Ammonia fumes. Open a window or door.

Somethings I learned this weekend...buffing the brass to make a plate look like new is kind of a pain...using a scouring pad will get caked on stuff off but scratch the reedplate...denture stuff is great for softening gunk (and then use something like KaBOOM...big difference...KaBOOM says let it stand for 1-3 minutes, but 10-15 is better.

This is a seriously bad idea! Ammonia reacts with brass and makes it more brittle.
