I have a D harp and a Bb harp. Both special 20's. The 4 draw on the Bb is busted (a C), I'd like to use a reed from the d harp to replace it. The d harp has two reeds the same length: the A and the F# (both low). If I replace it, can I tune them up? I would think so since the reeds are the same dimensions.

Thoughts?

Phogi,

I can't answer your question, but if you go to Richard Sleigh's website RSleigh.com and sign up on his email list he will automatically send you a PDF with info on marine bands. It includes a comprehensive reed replacement chart good for all the "handmade" hohners. Based on the chart, it doesn't look like the D has a straight match, but if I'm reading the chart correctly, if you have another blown out harp in C or F you should be able to find a match without tuning it up.

You may be able to, but you may also need to physically trim some of the reed, and then there's the issue of the tuning and how much may be necessary or if you have to drop solder on the reed and then file down the solder.

Personally, I'd be against using reeds from the D because the harps on Hohners from D and higher tend to be more of the short slot variety and from C and lower, they're usually longer slot and that also may pose a bit of a problem as well.

I just finished. It works!I used the A and it BARELY made it. That reed is looking quite thin now.

Now I have a back up Bb, and only one blown harp. Smiles all around.

Also, this is my first successful reed replacement on anything but a 'kay' harp. Smiles all around!

Phogi, just make sure that the reed is fluah flat on the plate and what you should do is get a small nail set and a tack hammer, place the nail set on the rivet hand, and then gently tap it down with the hammer just to make sure because if the rivet job is not seated properly, it will also cause a big air leak.

You can buy single reeds from "harponline" 1/2 euro each.
