Any suggestions for the best way to do this? My understanding is this is typically done with the draw plate only since it is so difficult to do the blow plate.
I've had success flat sanding MB combs before and after sealing them. ---------- Mike Fugazzi http://www.myspace.com/niterailband http://www.youtube.com/user/NiteRail http://www.twitter.com/NiteRail http://www.facebook.com/mike.fugazzi

I think what he meant to say was you'll need to remove the reeds and rivets first.
Is it really worth it though?

I'm sorry, did I miss something that said a question posed on the forum had to be approved worthy and sensible in the opinion of other members?

I've found just flat sanding / sealing the combs works wonders....however I am CERTAINLY no expert. I do it on the draw plate only. Using a similar method to the way I sand my combs flat. I use the finest grade sandpaper I can get and then lay it on a glass sheet. Then sand it using as little pressure as possible.

I do nothing except reed gapping. I flat sanded a blues harp comb once and it helped, but not as much as the gapping. After playing a year now, I just play it and tweak the reeds if it is a little inconsistent between them. I don't have the time for anything else.

For everybody that doesn't know, here's the article from HarmonicaSessins on flat sanding reed plates. Mike, I'm sure you've studied it thoroughly. Do you maybe have anything to add to the article with your experiences? ---------- germanharpist on YT. =;-) - Resonance is KEY!

Lol, I've actually downloaded that and thought it was all about the comb. I don't have much experience with sanding the reed plates...pretty much everything else though.
To be honest, I've always felt MB's were so much extra work when I could just get a GM, tweak the reeds and go. But I am to the point now where I have the tools and resources to work on MB's and have found them a lot of fun to play.
Customizing my harps has become a sort of a Zen-like experience for me and a very entertaining challenge over the last year. It has really helped my playing technique and understanding of the instrument and how to approach it. I've been fortunate to receive instruction from some pretty awesome builders too!
