Here's one for all you DIY mic builders.....
Just finished a very cool job for one of my customers. He had one of the NOS EV M43/U mics that have been for sale on eBay. The mic was MILSPEC, and was evidently used in tanks! Anyway - as it comes it is cool, but it has an unusable connector and it is low impedance. As you can see from the before and after picture, the mic has undergone a transformation:
- Remove the tail - reshape the rear of the mic, polish and prep
- Nickel plating - I prefer nickel to chrome - its period correct and looks better
- install screw-on connector - this requires machining a custom bushing to fill the old connector hole
- Install a volume pot and custom billet knob (made by me)
- Install an internal impedance matching transformer
The result is what you see here. I think it came out really nice.

That is way cool. but I kinda' like the original version. It looks cold war Soviet. The Nickel plating is sweet. Did you do that yourself? or did you sub that out? I'm interested in having some work done. I was gonna go with someone local to do a re-chrome job but if you could do that, I would rather go with you. ---------- The Art Teacher Formally Known As scstrickland

I sub out my plating and anodizing. You don't want to do your own - there are some truly nasty chemicals involved. Plating is expensive - the only way I could make it work for this customer was to bring in 8 shells and grills all at once. I now own the others and will somehow some way some day offer them to customers. (I have two more EV43 shells that I had plated at the same time - ready for exactly the same treatment as above......) ---------- /Greg

i'll definitely vouch for the sound of the m43u after it's been heumanized. greg did a job for me, very similar minus the nickel plating. i had him leave the tail on it also for purposes of mounting on a stand if i want. but the sound is key, and it's really great!

Great looking mic Greg. I like that nickel plate finish. A JT30 shell would look great in that I suspect.

Looks awesome Greg! How would you describe this mic's tone? On par with other EV mics? ----------

Ryan, Todd - yes - it sounds like an EV630 - basically the same dynamic element. Not quite as ballsy as a CM but breaks up nicely without sounding harsh. ---------- /Greg

Great job Greg, I have seen many of those mics selling on ebay and was always turned off by the chunky, military look. What you have done is truly a work of art;turning an ugly duckling into a beautiful swan. Not only cosmetically but by transforming it to hiZ. Way to go.

@Kingley - I didn't plate any JT30 shells this time, but I did plate some 707 and 520 shells and grills. Let me know if you're interested. ---------- /Greg
