*NOW THAT I HAVE YOUR ATTENTION---PLEASE READ BEFORE WATCHING VIDEO*

Without reading it won't make much sense, there IS harp content

Most of you have figured out that I am an Art teacher, One of the things I do at my school Is coach an Odyssey of the Mind team. If you don't know what Odyssey of the Mind is, I will try to explain it to you. It's not easy

Odyssey of the Mind (Ootm) is a world wide creativity competition.

The competitions are on the Regional, State and World level

Elementary, Middle and High School teams are given a problem that they must create a solution for and perform their solution before a group of judges. The students must create everything. No adults are allowed to help. A coach's job is to just facilitate. A typical competition may have between 500 and 1000 kids and looks like a 12 ring circus with the craziest things you will ever see going down the hallway of a public school. The performances are judged on the creativity of the solution, creativity of the performance and how well the team met the guidelines for the problem.

The video that follows is my team's solution to this year's problem. Remember, what you see was dreamed up, created, made and performed entirely by my students. I did teach them how to play harmonica, but they chose the instrument (against my better judgment) they wrote the lyrics to to song as well as the entire script. Other than the "I'm a man" riff. EVERYTHING you see was created by children under the age of 11. My students attend an inner city school and most live below the poverty level. As you watch please keep in mind the importance of art in our public schools.

@Tooka2 this is probably the main reason I didn't compete in HPC3, I had bigger fish to fry

Our problem: The team is to create a story that has a food item put on trial for being unhealthy or bad in some way. The performance must include a jury that gives a signal for the verdict, the Jury may not be played or manipulated directly by a student. There must also be a team created artistic representation that may be music, poetry, art, writing, etc (in our case it was the song)

Here are our results

Here the team practices before the competition

Music is your own experience, your own thoughts, your wisdom. If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn. They teach you there's a boundary line to music. But, man, there's no boundary line to art. - Charlie Parker

Good job.
I was an Oddessy of the Mind coach once, about 15 years ago. My gang was not as succesful. The next year I was a judge, less presure. I'm glad to see that th OM is still going.

And the harp content was fine.
