Strange, because his hair and beard say "I'm just a regular joe; I hope you like my completely ordinary music which is not at all mind-bendingly nutty."
i used to do stuff like that a few years ago. ill still have some pretty crazy recordings that would give you nightmares. i used to drink allot of absinthe at the time. ----------
you know what phogi you are right. I didn't listen to the 2nd and 3rd videos and after doing so Battles are nowhere near as crazy as this guy. I love fucked up shit like this and always have...the more fucked up the better. Nastyolddog put up a video of Anklepants which is also excellent.
in my mind it was not the craziness that differentiated the two...it was quality. Sxip has is, battles are trying but not there yet. In Sxip I hear somone who has studied Stockhausen and Aphex Twin, in Battles I hear something that just isn't there yet.
Really? I really like that Battles tune. I have see Aphex Twin over here in London and he was mind-blowing but I saw Battles play this song live on TV and it was awesome. Have you ever listened to God Speed You Black Emperor? They are a Canadian collective and they are pretty far out there too.
Actually, I have some "exerimental" stuff that I might post up here... It's more like a sketch of song that i'm making. I'm calling it "devilbilly" for now... I have some video of me rehersing it... It's not nearly finished enough for me to want to post to YouTube, bu i might link it up through my photobucket account if any of you are interested in it. It uses my one string cigar box guitar, RP155, and harp... Anyway, I think all of you who liked that Sxip Shirey stuff might like it... Let me know and i'll post it... ---------- ------------------ The magnificent YouTube channel of the internet user known as "isaacullah"
Yeah post away Isaac, I'd like to see what you are up to. I watched all the Sxip videos. He is one helluva guy. He is very talented and a seriously accomplished musician. Puts on a great show.
Alright, here it is. This is from my photobucket account, not YouTube. This isn't together enough for me to consider it a complete song yet, and I'm mainly noodling on the harp part trying to find things that work in the overall theme of the piece. My inspiration is from Psycobilly music, mainly the song "Bad Things" which has gained fame as being the theme song for the show "True Blood". I had vampires and other monsters in my head for this. It's not quite as experimental as Sxip Shirey, but it's experimental for me! Thoughts, ideas, and suggestions for ways to go will be appreciated!
BTW, I've started videoing these experimental sessions, and saving out the parts I want to remember. Otherwise I tend to forget all the things I was doing, and I'll "loose" the song. I'll usually go through about three "noodling" sessions before I've got something I consider to be a "song". I've found this method to be a pretty good creation tool... ---------- ------------------ The magnificent YouTube channel of the internet user known as "isaacullah"
@todd. Yes, the new RP's (with the *55 suffix) all have a built in looper. It's not as fully functional as most dedicated loop pedals (which have several independant loops you can trigger seperately), but it's pretty damn good. You can do overdubs (sound on sound), and you can bypass it while it still loops in the background so that when you bring it back, it's still in sync with you. It's also got a sound activated record function so that you can just arm it, and then start playing, and it will begin the loop recording automatically. Also, you can still change to another amp/fx patch while it's looping so you can get any tone you want for an overdub or to play along. The audio quality of the loop is very very good. It's a pretty sweet piece of machinery, and it costs LESS THAN HALF than the most simple, cheapest, loop pedal (the BOSS RC-2 at $190, which only can do one loop), and does much much much more than that BOSS pedal can do. ---------- ------------------ The magnificent YouTube channel of the internet user known as "isaacullah"
Don't think photobucket did you any favours with the sound quality there Isaac. I get the gist of where you're going with this though. Looking forward to see how you develop this. It's exciting watching a new genre in its embryonic stages. I'm going to have to do some fruity looping and get in on this.
Wow, yeah, I just listened to the photobucket vid, and the sound is all different. Note to self: don't use photobucket for videos any more! The sound wasn't very good to begin with since I was just using my crappy web camera to record this. Like I said, this was just a sketch to help me remember what I was doing. If/when I develop this further, I'll record it better and post it again... Thanks for listening though! ---------- ------------------ The magnificent YouTube channel of the internet user known as "isaacullah"
Weirdness just for the sake of being weird bores me. Some of the rhythmic stuff Sxip is doing is interesting, but frankly I think Son of Dave is more musically coherent. The Battles had me going until the chipmunks-style process vocals. It's gotta make sense, otherwise you're just wanking, and who wants to watch you do that? Maybe I shouldn't have asked...
Isaac I think it's great. I got an Akai headrush for christmas and I'm still messing with it and learning what it can do. I'm trying out something similar with a few chords on the guitar and then harp over the top. I've tried doing a few Irish type rhythms on the bongos as well and that's coming on well. I need to get a webcam and record some and try and post them.
Keep it up man...weird/crazy is always good in my book, crazier the better.
Thanks for posting the original video Tooka...we need more of this on the forum.
Anyway, here is my attempt at something a little harpboxy. It's done in two tracks, on LLF and C. The only effect is to amplify it a bit since the recording was really quiet and to fix the rhythm in the melody a little bit (by cutting and pasting blank sound from behind the note to in front of it.) It's just a clip from the tune. I screwed up the rhythm in the recording. I'll post the longer version when I get that fixed.
nacoran: I liked that! I think the rhythm track was damn good. Yeah, I heard the few times where you were off the beat, but that can easily be fixed. For the melody track, I liked your note combination, but I think that it would be more fitting if you added some reverb or delay. At least I've found when adding in melody tracks on a higher harp, that delay/verb will make them stand out more, while at the same time helping them lay more rhythmically aligned with they underlying beat/rhythm track...
Thanks Isaac. I was kind of improvising the melody. I've worked on it a little more and have it down better. I could just bring the volume on that track up a bit too. Unfortunately my computer is a little short on ram and half the time when I try to add effects Audacity crashes. I've almost got enough scraped together for a new CPU/Motherboard/RAM combo. I've been playing over that even higher on the upper end of the C harp.
The next step is to rerecord the whole thing. It's kind of hard because on the beat track the percussive noise I'm making is very slobbery; it's a tongue cluck and a lip smack that uses the air seal to get a little rebound note, but by the time I get towards the end of the song the harp has ideas of it's own.
edit- I'm also working on a video for it. I've got some shaky video I took of a ground wasp building it's nest. I'm hoping I can synchronize it's little tail shakes to the music!
