I'm still deciding but I'd like to. Jon, how long is the flight? I'm not sure I can do this and do SPAH. Life is mean, I'll write a blues about it.

When was the last time you flew? Its 2 hrs in the airport waiting in line so that TSA can violate your civil rights and steal any liquids you thought you might dare to travel with. If they see your Harps in you cary on bag with the xray and think they are .22 clips then you get to have your own private meeting with the TSA agents (in plain view of everybody). Then there is the 30 min delay because the flight crew is over their hourly limit set by the FAA. The good news is the torture could end here, as you could get bumped because the flight is overbooked and you bought the cheap tickets. Then there is another 30min wait on the tarmac. Seems like 3 hrs if the person on your left weighs more than 300 lbs. More like 6 hrs if the guy on your right is in the same condition. Then the plane takes off. This is the best part of the trip because you know if you hit a flock of Geese and the plane goes down you are surrounded by 600 lbs of human airbags. Thats when the pilot turns off the fasten seatbeult light. Don't get excited you ain't goin' nowhere. It just means the guy in the seat in front of you can recline his seat into your lap. About this time the air pressure builds causing the baby in the seat behind you to star crying. Don't worry it's only an hour flight. Did I mention the guy on your left fell asleep with his head on your shoulder and he is a heavy breather. Just hope he doesn't drool. After your hour of hell in the sky. Its time to pick up your luggage which you shouldn't bother to do because it is either lost or the guerillas they hire as baggage handlers busted everything you own. Plan on spending most of the day getting there Jon.

There's a 3 hour direct flight from LaGuardia to Memphis on Northwest.

If it were me and I didn't have the money to fly, I'd probably resolve that I was going to team up with three other crazy harp-guys, pool money for gas, take whoever's car was in the best shape, leave early on Friday morning, and drive the 1100 miles straight through. There shouldn't be any traffic on I-81, and certainly none after 9 PM on Friday; once you hit the Tennessee border (Bristol) it's smooth sailing, most of it on I-40 west.

That is an epic voyage, but doable. You'll make it to the crossroads by 11 AM Saturday.

MapQuest estimates the fuel cost for the Philly-Foxfire run at $111, assuming 25 mpg. That's about $28 a person if four people share.

pssh...air bags. my car dont have airbags. if you need an airbag that means you crashed the car. an if you crashed the car its gonna cost you money. an who needs to replace a air bah on top of that. those things are expensive. just duct tape a pillow to your steering wheel.

First post, just came back to the harmonica. Never really was serious with it. Think I'll get serious now.
I live on the Mississippi Gulf Coast and am thinking of going myself, can't be more than a 4 hour drive. Wondering how much a beginner will get out of it?

death- i gotta believe you will get a whooole lot out of it. it seems like a good bunch of guys going and i dont think many of them will be shy in helping you along.
even if the seminars are a little beyond you, you will at least walk away from them with ideas on where you may want to go.
4 hour drive for this...? it's a no-brainer!

Still waiting to hear from the surgeon on the exact date of my wife's surgery. First four weeks of rehab are mostly bed time for her. Need to be there at that time. Will repost when I find out surgery date so I can determine whether I can book a flight. (Evidently the surgeon had the appointment and then went out of town for a couple weeks.) Sheesh, I need a vacation. Last real vacation when I wasn't painting my house was in 2008. I just hope if I get to show up I don't spend the whole time sleeping. LOL!

@DB: I think it will be worth your while. First of all, WHATEVER the level of the actual presentations, you'll have the chance to hear guys like Billy Branch, Billy Gibson, and Terry Bean close up--not all amped up, but "naked harp," so speak, in a calm context where you'll really be able to hear what they're doing. You'll hear their stories--how and from whom they learned, tales from the life of a pro harp player--and you'll get some specific teaching from them. You can bring a recording device and get all this.

Then there are the evening concerts, and a couple of performances sprinkled into the cocktail hours. Billy Branch WITHOUT his band, playing with local Mississippi bluesman Bill Perry: that will be a chance to see Billy take some risks. How does a pro handle that sort of occasion, without the protection of his band?

Finally, we're going to organize at least one breakout session a day for beginners or players more at that end of the spectrum--either that, or a breakout session for advanced players. Either way, there will definitely be at least two occasions when what is being presented is specifically for people at more or less your level of achievement.

Last but not least, there are certain to be after-hours jams and other attendee-generated madness that is part of what makes this sort of event fun.

I'm going to be driving up from Tampa Florida, hopefully with a buddy of mine, it's about a 12 hour drive straight thru,ca't wait for this event.

I was in Mississippi last year, following the Blues trail, and kinds skipped out on the North Country. This thing is going to be a blast, if only Junior Kimborogh and RL were still here to join us, that would be "In heaven sitting down"

Roll on May 22nd, exactly 1 week after my birthday!!
