The basic question is: How do we want to manage harpfriends on youtube?

To begin with we only had a common channel and we just gave out the passoword to everybody that wanted to upload stuff. However, before HPC3 there were some security concerns so we decided that it would be better to change to a group instead of a channel.

The basic advatages of a group should be that you could:
-manage the members without giving the password away randomly
-upload/add videos with very little effort
-discuss and rate videos

However, here comes the shit: It doesn't really work.

I read up a little and it seems that we don't stand alone with the problems we encountered. In general there are problems with organizing the videos, the confusing layout, adding videos, etc. etc.

As there is a lot of echo over the complications I'm sure that google is working on it, however I'm not sure how long it will take to get the issues resolved.

If for nothing else it would be good to have something that works for HPC4.

So, how do we advance?

To add to the problems the harpfriends channel is in the process of merging with some random gemail address (of somebody in this forum I supposed) and I'm not sure how to revert this process.

GH,

With regard to the HPCs, as I suggested twice before, we just have a dedicated, insecure channel. To that end, I set this up:

http://www.youtube.com/user/HarpfriendsContests

The password is:

jamescotton

Using this for furure HPC playlists would avoid the admin nightmare that tooka had recently with HPC3.

If people don't like the idea, then I'm cool with that. I just don't know enough about the ins and outs of YouTube to suggest anything better.

GH- I don't know much about different groups on YouTube. I know Tooka did a lot of work on this, but maybe just having a thread that no one posts anything on except entries might work. After the contest entry day passed we could let people comment on the same thread. We explain the rules in the first post and delete any comments that don't abide by that rule (so no one's entry gets buried under a ton of other posts.)

I'll ask my friend if he has any ideas. Anyone out there see how other forums do stuff like this? I belonged to a forum where one member actually set up a page for taking surveys. It worked pretty well, although the fact that it was on another site prevented some people from clicking through. Another member set up a chat room with scheduled chats. He'd post the logs the next day so good ideas didn't get lost when the chat was over.

Hmm! Maybe it's best not to have a dedicated channel/group and rely on everyone having there own personal YouTube Channel. They can then embed their HPC entries into a thread on here when the word goes out that the HPC entry thread is open. The only problem is keeping that thread for entries only and ask a mod to delete anything other than entries.

Most of us have our own channels anyway and the easier it is to administer the HPC's the better.

We can't keep hand-feeding people with info on how to do this or do that because in two months time there will be a new batch of people on the forum asking the same questions again, even though it's in the "How to Do" section.

I didn't compete in HPC but as a fairly active member of the forum I did vote. I don't know how to resolve the issue being discussed here, in fact I'm not even sure I understand the issue.

I will say this though, the fact that all the entries and the ability to vote appeared on a single thread here, was a HUGE factor in my participating in the listening and voting. It was super accessible and easy for any forum member who wanted to..to do so. If in the future, participating means having to go to individual you tube channel to listen to the respective entries and another place to vote I am much less likely to listen/participate.

Then again, maybe the contest is better off without the vote of somebody like myself who is interested in participating in my own half assed way.

At any rate, kudos to those responsible for putting the last one together. As a voter only, it was easy and fun.

No need for that HOB. If the videos are all embedded in one thread on this forum, you won't need to go to any YouTube channels at all.

GH--I had noticed the issue about linking the harpfriends channel to a google account as well. Based on your comment, I felt empowered to go into the channel's account settings and delink it from that google email address. It should be ok unless (until?) Google takes the next step of completely eliminating separate log-on for youtube.

I also second Mickil's idea. Why don't we just use the channel he set up. I remember his earlier post where he noted that if the channel was compromised, the worst that could happen is that contestants would need to repost their entries.

So I tried it, and it seemed easy to me.

I had to:
LOGOUT of my regular account
LOGIN as harpfriendscontest
PASSWORD jamescotton
UPLOAD a 9 second test video

I'M READY for HPC4

If someone wants to remove my test, it's OK with me.

Why not just upload one of your own embedded videos direct onto a dedicated thread on this forum?

This is exactly what happens with the entries anyway.

The dedicated thread could be open eg for 5 days with a close off date when entries must all be on the thread.

No other comments are allowed on the thread ie it is strictly for posting your video and information about the post.

This way we can do a series of videos onto our own individual channel and then pick one to share and post.

Or is all this too simple?

@Aussiesucker@ Exactly what I suggested. That way the onus is on everyone to embed within the window of opportunity.

We could have a dedicated thread with a note at the top saying it was for entries only, then when the entry time was up it could then be our voting thread too.

It wouldn't take much to administer and we could always get GH to delete any rogue posts to the thread.

We just got to keep it simple. Micks idea is OK but there is no real need for yet another seperate channel when we put our videos on our own channels anyway.

I think that tooka may well be right. Embedding is, after all, a piece of cake.

The main thing is, though, that we now have at least two straightforward ways to achieve the same thing.
