Chris, I posted a comment in the other thread about semantics and you were the only person who even touched on what I was getting at. From your clip I think you define "Tone" in the same way I do, as simply the quality (in the objective sense of the word) of the note; whereas other people were using it to include all the technical ornamentation - vibrato, slapping etc... that enrich those notes in certain styles. The result was a huge argument about 2 different things. Do you agree?

Chris,

The truth is, I can't tell from that clip. Though, if they were played well, the difference in that short passage should be negligable.

Having said that, I think that the thread's title is a misnomer: there is no 'versus'; both techniques are necessary, if you want to move beyond the basics.

About the clip: don't forget that we're hearing the frequencies diluted/distorted on our 'puters.

"My computer plays it the same way yours does and I'm not using fancy speaker either, just the shit that came with the computer."

You're 'puter's speakers are not the same as everyone else's; they can't be.

I don't understand why you always have to argue everything to the nth degree. I really don't. Maybe it's just me. Oh well, hey ho. Horses for courses and all that.

this thread is done. I took the time to record a file in an effort to shed some light on a controversial subject and some of you thought it would be cool shit on the thread.

Never again will offer help to this board.

Do you promise?

Just kidding, big guy. But you have to see the irony here? You goad people on this board constantly and when people pay it back to you, you take your bat and ball and go home.

I have to admit I was put off by Buddha when I first came onto this board, but I have come to see him as a self-expressed, no bullshit kind of guy who has great things to offer. He says what he means so there is nothing to really argue about.

There is no where to go and nothing to get, chill out guys... or don't.

There, I feel better now!

Love ya,

Shane

Why even start it again? I don't post on here as often as some others but, I do visit everyday. I gleen very useful information from most everyone in some way or the other.

Unfortunatly I see the same old shit fights starting over and over. Most often having the pot stirred by the same people.

If I were a beginner and needed to rely on the help from certain members of this board I think I would look somewhere else.

I think this quote from an old thread that I recently read says it all.

"When I was in 2nd grade, I went to a catholic grade school. I pretty have always know religion is a bunch of garbage designed to control people since I was born. I recall being in trouble for telling the nun how wrong they were about everything in this world. I explained to them how things are when you allow yourself to be connected to the source."

All this powerful knowledge in 2nd grade? or even any year of grade school? I throw the BS flag. Sorry I am so late in doing so.

Buddha, I hope you're not serious. I admit, your personality has taken some getting used to on my part (even recently) but I've appreciated your helpfulness from day one!

Ignore those new to the forum and give them a chance to get used to you as I have.

I'm with you. I get tired of the sycophancy that goes on instead of critical analysis. But by the same token, if you're gonna hand out manly slaps you need to man up and take them on the chin when people come back at you.

Just an opinion. We all have them.

it's not an issue of being able to "man up and take it"

It's an issue of intent. I was here to teach and to help, all of my are DESIGNED to make people think differently, unless I'm pissed then anything goes..

All of the comments in this thread were attacks on me. I took the time to make a recording to help the members of the board and was basically told to fuck off.

So Bye.

As ye sew so shall ye reap.

Budda your intentions may have been altruistic in this thread, but your history in other threads follows you around.

My view is - don't go changing. Your posts are often very entertaining simply because of the unwarranted superior attitude. They certainly get a chuckle out of me. But don't be so sensitive when you've spent a lot of time kicking heads yourself. It looks weak.

yes it's very christelle like but fuck....I'm getting sick of it whenever I start threads with an effort to help people, then I get attacked because people don't understand me on a personal level.

I don't claim to be completely sane in fact I like that I'm emotional and quite impetuous as you can't be a good artist otherwise.

No EV. I started it to show others that the tone between the two are the same and right away with the first message I was attacked.

I know I'm right, I don't have to prove anything to anybody harmonica wise. I'm out there constantly changing and making new paths for the harmonica, what have you done but piss on my efforts?

I'm lost. I see a couple posts that were maybe a little grumpy, but nothing that anyone should be getting this upset about. Buddha, you took down your sound file. By doing that you've deprived other people the chance to judge this thread in context. It's your sound file, so hey, whatever. My best friend has a very similar teaching style. It's very confrontational. It works well with some people. It turns other people off. I watched some of my favorite teachers in school. Just like harmonica, with teaching, sometimes different teaching methods work better for different people.

As to the tongue block/lip purse issue, I think sometimes it's really hard to convey subtle things like tone differences with just a sound clip. The harmonica isn't like guitar or piano where it's really easy to see what the other person is doing. Hand work is one thing, but so much of it happens in the mouth where without an X-Ray it's pretty hard to see what's going on.

I got to listen to the clip once, and the different parts sounded pretty similar. I can pucker and tongue block, and I can hear the difference in tone- on some harps. On others it's not as audible. I'm a lip purser myself, most of the time.

Jon

Know the smallest things and the biggest things, the shallowest things and the deepest things. As if it were a straight road mapped out on the ground ... These things cannot be explained in detail. From one thing, know ten thousand things. When you attain the Way of strategy there will not be one thing you cannot see. You must study hard.

You have even LEFT the forum once or twice before. The fact is you are the one starting rubbish in AG's MBH. I challenge you to go away for a few weeks and see how everyone gets along.

Actually the true greats weren't consciously irascible. They just were. It's clear that you're aware of it, so I see it as an artistic choice on your part. Part of the act as it were.

I still can't get over the number of posts that have been deleted here after the fact. It's either censorship or cowardice - either way it's like the Han dynasty rewriting history. The thread is now a misrepresentation of events today. I'm not deleting my posts, so now it looks like I led the charge. The reality is there were about 14 posts before I ducked in and goosed Booder.

I think you took Dennis a little out of context. What he said was:

To Buddha: it DOESN'T make you better than everybody else, even in (as you say) "harmonica terms". You being a great player means you are just that - great player. Period. Not "better" - we won't even GO there because that term is extremely subjective anyway. But there are many different aspects to playing harmonica - let alone being a musician - that I doubt many people are "better then everyone else".

Ev630, it's not censorship. Perhaps it's regret? I don't know. Members can delete there posts but mods really try hard not to delete anything except spam.

For the record, I saw this thread from pretty early on and your right, a comment here or there being removed can change how an argument looks a lot.
