Where do you draw the line between rock and blues?

I grew up with rock and roll and knew nothing about blues. I loved the Rolling Stones but had no idea they were playing blues songs. The first harmonica player I loved was Magic Dick and his rock and roll band.

I loved the Mississippi Fred McDowell record "I Do Not Play No Rock and Roll", but I thought he DID play rock and roll. Of course I was wrong about that...

But, I do still believe J Geils was a rock band. And so are the Rolling Stones.

I understand that it isn't a hard line. Just a line in the sand.

I'm not sure where the line is. Aerosmith sits on that line (or at least used to, they've gotten much more rock-poppy.) Some of their album tracks are pretty bluesy.
