If you've never been over to the Billboard charts, you might have an educational experience. I was thinking "what makes the most popular music so popular? Lets go listen to the top 20 charted songs and find out."
The best one I found was a song by Train. After that, a Ludacris song called 'How low can you go' which I felt was a great metaphor for the whole experience of listening to most of those top 20 tunes.
The irony of it was that none of the tunes seemed like they were made by talentless hacks, but that they were made ugly by intent. Reminded me of the book "Bluebeard" where Rabo Karakabien is explaining abstract expressionism. He says something along the lines of "It was our way of showing the world that we would not participate, would not add one inch of beauty to the world, because that would imply that we approved of it."
I keep thinking that we must be in a time of abstract expressionism for popular music. Perhaps I can appreciate the music from the radio if I view it in this light.
Or perhaps I am now an old man. I did turn 30 the other day, so now, if I want to listen to something that still gives at least a nod to melody and harmony I guess "country" and "adult contemporary" are what is left in the realm of new popular music.
I guess that's ok, some of those songs are not bad.
Thoughts?

If you dig deep enough, they have a blues chart! Soundtrack to chess records is #1.
