Hiya Folks,

I recently heard of a site that allows random 1on1 voice/camera communication. It's TOTALLY random with 10's of thousands of people all across the world.

www.chatroulette.com

There are a lot of weird/inappropriate things, but the positive outweighs the negative.

I just leave it on "autoconnect" and it connects to someone new automatically as I practice. Interesting conversations arise! I had a conversations with a young black girl named Jessica and she was really interested in learning about the harmonica. sometimes people jam along! many people have pulled out the guitar. Sometimes, they just sit back and listen. And a lot of the time they just skip. It's worth it, though, to keep at it just for those gem moments.

Practice should be very interesting and NOT lonely if you are deliberately practicing to get better. Don't let your mind wander when you practice. FOCUS.

Lol. That's the weirdest way to practice I've ever heard of. MAL, practice should be interesting, but lets face it, some days you just don't feel like doing anything. I don't think I'd chose this as my primary way to practice, but sitting alone in a room isn't going to give you a chance to jam with complete strangers. I'd just be worried about the weirdos. Who knows, maybe someone will figure out how to monetize this. You could have a site devoted to music and people could pop in for part of a show. After the first couple of minutes you start to charge! Even a dollar for fifteen minutes could add up if you got a bunch of people watching. It would be like one of those old peep shows but from the safety of your own home.

MAL, are you telling me you've never been practicing and thought "kay, I'll go do something else" because you just didn't feel like playing? even your fancy "focus" won't help you then.

Nacoran, I really think this CAN be monetized. All they have to do is add accounts, and allow people to be able to message each other. I think this is the next big thing. It's recently launched and there's over 20,000 users @ any given time.

Oda, you should check this site out. It's got screen captures of what can go wrong on Chatroulette and other chats. It's kind of funny.

'lonely' is a word ive never even thought to use to describe whats on my mind when I practice...

depression is about as close as it comes to lonely, as far as feelings are concerned...and i gotta say, playing for someone I just met in allah ackbar land doesnt appeal to me at all... Ill just pet my cat now...

Your post is the is the funniest thing I've heard all day Oda. Seriously I can't stop laughing. If I don't feel like practicing I simply don't. You will just build bad habits and not progress if you force you self to practice when you don't feel like it. Most people don't know HOW to practice. I would say I have perfected the art of practicing more than perfected my technique on an instrument. Yet... Most people simply don't practice efficiently and effectively which is why they don't see results. It has little to do with talent IMHO. Maybe intelligence plays a factor... Nevertheless, if you want to "practice" I don't think your voyeur approach will make you a better player, only a less lonely one. Besides, maybe try getting OUT of the house to practice. Go into the woods and practice. Nevertheless, I digress.

Michael, I've watched your progress on the harmonica since i've joined this forum last fall, and i must say i am very impressed! I have been meaning to post something about your progress. I've seen the vid's of you playing some "improv jazzy stuff" on the instrument you traded in for harp. Just by watching those clips i could tell you come from a jazz/classical training! With that said, i know that you have the knowledge of practicing!... could you start a new thread on the technique of practice(woodsheding)i think a thread of such would help many of us harp freaks!

Thank You Michael!

MAL,

I'm going to second Iggy's comment about a new thread on the technique of practice. I definitely feel i'm not as effective and efficient as I should be. I would be interested in your thoughts on the subject.
Granted practice will vary accross individuals given the differences in skill level and what needs to be worked on, but there must be some useful common principals.

I would like to third Iggy's comment about a new thread, MAL. You've clearly got some strong feelings and philosophies when it comes to practicing -- and practicing right.

Allowing naked people who are manifesting inappropriate behavior to sit in on your practice. Now that is a shame. Disgraceful conduct.
Better be careful. Doing something like that could get you into trouble. You might start having original ideas, find yourself mixed up with the
bohemian underclass ( all of those degenerate poets, actors, and musicians ). You won't pass the background test or find yourself cultivated by the right sort of people.
At least ask yourself, what would your mother say?

Lol. Chickenthief- the only place he's likely to find a worse element is on a musical instrument forum. :)

My theory is that you should never practice. Just play when the mood strikes you--but always strive to play new stuff.

Of course, it might be instructive to keep in mind that MAL kicked my ass in the last MBH challenge--and I've been dicking with music for longer than his dad has been alive ;). . .
