I read this article over on Slate and I couldn't help but think about all the debate over pre-War harps vs. new harps.

Slate

I knew in the back of my head that pianos had changed a lot over the years, but I'd never heard old pianos playing. The article talks about felt and action, but somehow doesn't deal with tuning. The sound clips are impressive though.

you can get an old upright piano for free all the time on craigslist. people just give em away as long as you can get it out of there. thats the tricky part cause you have to hire a piano mover. otherwise id have one by now.

Thanks for the link! I sent it to the couple who run the piano shop where we bought our piano.

They restore pianos. They also tune and move them.

Buying a used piano from craigslist is hit or miss - usually miss. There is a lot to do to restore them properly. Probably a heck of a lot more than customizing or restoring harmonicas, actually. And then again, not every piano was built to last.

But those sound clips are impressive. My wife and I were considering buying a Yamaha Clavinova instead of the piano we now own. Those clips make me remember why we made that choice.
