IMPORTANT NOTE FOR THOSE WHO HAVE DOWNLOADED THE ALBUM:

The Nat Riddles tone-virus has now infected you. None of your other harmonica recordings will ever sound quite the same.

Seriously, I have an important advisory: two of the tracks in the NatRiddlesAdjustedPitch zip file that you've downloaded--Houserockin Blues and Good Morning Little School Girl--are cut off about halfway through. This unfortunate flaw was brought to my attention about six weeks ago and I've got the proper length tracks on my Mac desktop. In fact, I'm in the process of uploading a NEW zip file of the Nat Riddles collection that substitutes the full-length tracks.

What I'm also going to do is upload JUST those two tracks as a zip file and put a link in this post so that people can download them quickly, for free, and substitute them for the cut-off tracks.

The cut-off tracks happened when a friendly member of this forum--the person who adjusted the pitches--accidentally mutilated those two tracks. No big deal. The problem has now been corrected. In an ideal world, I would have fixed the problem BEFORE I asked everybody in the world to download the album for a buck. Better late than never.....

Here's the link for those two full-length cuts. They are a FREE download:

BTW, Nasty, thanks for using paragraphs as of late. It's much easier to read your comments now, although I think the one above may require some translation!

Got to listen to the whole thing today very enjoyable! I almost felt as though I was sitting at the cafe & experiencing his energy. I wouldn't quite recommend listening to while driving there's a number of traffic noises that sound close by, lol.

Adam, thanks for the "new" tracks. Until you brought it up in the other thread I had always assumed that the cut off tracks were simply a result of "street recording" (probably dead batteries).

I could not have put it any better! I highly recommend Satan and Adams "Word on the Street (WOTS)"

See Adams link to the left. It hit's the same senses. You can close your eyes and damn near smell the street.

I created a playlist of Nat's and WOTS I plug into everynight when I go to bed. Call it "Street Buskers."

I haven't strangled myself yet with the headphone cord in my sleep (my wife prefers silence)but I wouldn't mind goin' listening to these two

I missed the $1 offer, but had been meaning to download this for a while and just never got round to it so I did yesterday.

listened to it 3 times so far, 10(8euros)doesnt seem enough. I love this warts 'n' all type recordings because it gives you a slice of life from that particular time & those particular people and will never be repeated.

In the '80s we used to be able to get bootleg recordings of all the major gigs on cassette, sound quality was generally poor but what i liked was that you got everything... band mistakes and recovery, ad lib solos, singers interaction with the audience, audience response etc that you just wouldn't get from a pro recorded live albumn. this way you get the real atmosphere .

there was a thread about what makes greatness a little back and for me the Nat recording is an example of what it means, being able to draw in a crowd and captivate them with your music, and when the music stops, having the personallity humour and spirit to hold them talk WITH them and laugh WITH them.

I would have liked to have met Nat maybe have a chat and maybe a beer or two. someone that can inspire that feeling just by listening to a recording of them truly has an air of greatness somewhere in their soul.

thanks for making this available

could the be an honoury spot made in the top 10? would any forum member object? anyone agree?

Hey adam,
I'm two weeks away from payday but when it comes I'll send you the other $9...it's well worth it. I had never heard Nat playing before but what a great introduction. He's not just a great player but a fine showman and his banter with the public is excellent. It is a very evocative recording and I can imagine he must have been a great guy to know and learn from. As a lot of people have said on this thread, the background noises in the mix just add to the whole atmosphere. I'd die for tone like that and he seems to do it so effortlessly.
Thank you so much for this great opportunity to listen to a Blues Harp great.

I knew I'd forgotten something. What kind of set-up was Nat playing through when you recorded this?

Thanks Nasty.

I've seen a pic of the Mouse before,
I don't think they make 'em any more.

There's another 2 lines.

You know, that song would sound good with a little harp added.

"I'm half satisfied" would be a good title.

Yes, nastyolddog is right. He had a Turner mic. I'm quite sure that it was a Turner Challenger, based on the photo of that particular mic that I found on David Barrett's extraordinary page of mics. (Hint: scroll down)

He was playing through my Mouse. I still have the amp he played through.

OK, I've listened to the full album several times now and it was the best $1 I've ever spent.

Right now I can't stop playing "Easy". I have it on "repeat" in my mp3 player. It is easily my current favorite harmonica cut. I've always liked "Easy" by BW and enjoy hacking through Adam's lesson on that song. Nat truly makes it sound "Easy" and I just love where he takes it. This particular cut touches all my senses. As I listen I feel like I'm sitting on the street on a warm summer day listening to Nat jam.

It's also a great lesson in itself. My take on that cut is that, for the most part, Nat's not doing anything "technically" difficult. The beauty is in it's emotion and how he conveys that through the harmonica.

Thank you, Adam.

jay: I'm glad you feel that way about that particular track. Back when I was actively chasing down Nat's style, that one cut was the one I played over and over. His vibrato killed me. So did the mixture of complete relaxation AND intensity that he manages to put into this cut.

"...complete relaxation AND intensity that he manages to put into this cut..."

EXACTLY. It is so powerful/intense yet so laid back. It just shows that less is more and it's the "feeling" that matters.

I've been in a rut with my playing lately and put the harps down for a little bit. This one cut brought me back.

Hi Bro gasro just listening to Nat it's a fair bet he is 100% Tongue Blocker,
Adam says in his most enlightning intro that Nat tought him how to TB..

Nat was about a 95% tongue blocker. He showed me a specific technique that required lip pursing and involved putting the tip of my tongue right against the hole, then pulling it off to make a thwack! sound. But he was almost entirely a tongue blocker.

The important thing to remember about my relationship with Nat, close as it was, is that the moment I began overblowing, I wanted to do all kinds of things that he wasn't doing. I heard particular kinds of looping, beboppish lines that weren't in his vocabulary. And he encouraged me greatly in that. So while I idolized him in some ways, and hungered for what he had, I also broke away, spiritually, and went in my own direction.

The place where he really excelled was in the slow stuff, unaccompanied. I still remember when I hung out with him after I'd been playing with Mr. Satan, and he pulled those slow things out, and he really was like a kind of tai chi master, a push-hands master, in his ability to control time. Completely relaxed, never straining, and yet intense: never letting the power of his playing unbalance the way he locked into the groove. That's a rare thing. Heck, even Little Walter sped up when he got excited. Nat didn't.
