My wife and I are seriously considering moving there, and I'm wondering if anybody knows what it's like there as far as music scene--busking--and all that.
Of course, we are doing due diligence in researching on the net, and I'll probably fly down and reconnoiter the area before we move 2500 miles--but getting any personal takes on it here would be really cool.
One really cool thing--it's like only about 150 or so miles from the Hill Country event! And it is near Memphis. . .

for what it's worth,Jolene and i did a set at a blues for peace thing at craighead forest park with Hairy Larry and crew. about 3 seasons ago. several bands participated. no $$ changed hands. Hairy Larry may be a good resource for you as he lives in the area.
Jboro is also about 2 hours from Little Rock, arguable not the best blues scene but it does have a few things going for it. a few clubs that bring in at least local blues acts, and for busking there is a big farmers' market downtown. Jo and i have had a lot of good times there in the past 2 seasons. there are some dang good musicians that live in central arkansas too. it's about as close to memphis as jboro, and also to helena and clarksdale. both places to visit when one has time, on fest weekends the crowds are from literally all over the world and there are countless acts playing all over the place on those weekends. we spent a weekend just before Christmas near Baton Rouge and i got to play at a real deal juke joint there both nights. a trip to remember, it was a gas! but quite a drive from this area even so. we made a weekend of it. check out Teddy's Juke Joint via google.
if you do come down for a look-see, let me know if you plan to look Little Rock over and i'll see if i can show you some sights here!

I'm going to be in Jonesboro on April 9th for a Delta Blues symposium. I may stay through the 10th and play in the open mic thing that night. The symposium is at Arkansas State U.

I guess my point was that it's a college town. Smaller than Oxford; not as literary. Nice little town. I was there back in 1996 and again in 1997 for this same academic event.

It actually is sounding good, so far in the researching. I think we might do it soon. Thanks for the feedback on it.
@Jbone--I found out the coming down for a look-see is about the same price as just moving there and taking my chances--but I'll sure let you know if I make it to Little Rock. . .

Jonesboro has a nice blues scene that is growing. The college supports a "Blue Monday" every month at a local club and there is a Delta blues society that meets regularly at a club on main st. They also do open mic nights there. I live an hour away from there and I know they would love to have good blues player move there. I need to join their blues club 'cause I want them to keep it going.

The Delta Blues Symposium at ASU was great last year, despite the fact that I played harp at the open mic. They had some good bands and it looks pretty good this year too. I'm glad to hear that kudzurunner might be there I always enjoy his live performances.

When the best thing about a town is that it's "not too far from (somewhere else)" that should tell you something. Especailly when the distances are over an hour away.

It's a small world. He actually played the mic you sold me a month or so ago. So you guys had a connection you didn't even know about.

Yes, indeed it is a small world! He put on a good show with Johnny Sansone, and I had a good conversation with him. I have pics on my FaceBook page. ----------
