Looking for a fantastically easy way to upload, store and link files online?

Check out Dropbox!

You'll have to sign in and download a little program. However it's 2GB for free and the easiest way of managing files online I've ever seen!!

Follow this link to register so you and I will have an extra 250MB storage space. ;)

DISCLAIMER: This program is a recommendation of an IT friend of mine ("WHAT?? you don't know dropbox?"...). I haven't really tested it yet, all I did was link my test soundfile and it worked like a charm.

(Btw. that's Wild Bill Phillips 'Pebble In My Shoe')

GH > I have played around with BoxNet ie also free online storage of up to 1Gb.

Are you able to download the sound bar from DropBox ie looks a good site. Might reserve it for my better stuff.

One I recently put on BoxNet when I was mucking about with a Harmonic Minor:-

Google Docs now allows you to upload any file. You get 100 Mb for free. And you don't have to install any software on your computer.

As and example, here is Adam's "missing" youtube lesson 99 (Paul Butterfield albums)

Aussiesucker, no the 'sound bar' i.e. the player is the little script from the how-to site.
The advantage of Dropbox, and the reason for me to post it on the forum, is that you can link the files directly (i.e. you don't have to follow a link, i.e.leave the forum) to download the files. This also means that you can include it into the player (as I did above).
Btw.: Nice minor piece. I like this egyptian kind of riff embedded in this balkan/eastern style music... But then,... I like practically all folk music. And harmonic minor especially...

arzajac, good to know that you can also upload to googledocs. However, same problem as with BoxNet you have to follow the link to the other site and download it from there... Also, the file you linked was without extension. I added .flv so that it could be opened.
And a third thing: you may check with adam if it's ok to post the vid on the forum (I guess it should be ok...) however you could also tell him that the vid is blocked (I'm not sure if he gets notified). Maybe he could remove the copyright-infringed material and upload it again...

Yup MrVL, Dropbox is awesome. :)

Another thing I failed to mention:

The reason I say that it is fantastically easy to use: You don't have to open your browser and login to your webspace etc. Neither do you have to open a ftp client and login... . The uploading process is as easy as it gets. You have a folder (like any other) on your computer. All you've got to do is move the file into that folder and... tataaa: the file is uploaded. Then right-click on the file and you can select the address and you can link it directly from the forum.
As said, all from your computer... (without opening your browser) ... it's as easy as using windows-explorer.

GH > Thanks for comments re my efforts on harmonic minor.

Still unable to embed the player as you have done. Went to 'how to' site and inserted the file detail into the embed code & tried but did not work? Obviously something I'm not doing right? Or will this only work with DropBox?

With the player is it possible to also eg insert it direct into an email so the recipient doesn't have to open another file?

The problem with embedding sound files and linking files directly, is that they need to have the filename at the end of the address. Otherwise you can't embed them (you can just link to your webserver host and the person has to download the file from there).
DropBox gives you the correct address and makes direct links and embedding soundfiles possible.

Once you copied the file into the 'public' folder. Right-click it, select 'Dropbox'>'Copy Public Link'...

...and insert the Link...
<embed src="HERE" width="350" height="40" autostart="false" type="audio/mpeg" loop="false"></embed>

I never tried inserting the player code into an e-mail, but it should work. Depends if the recipient has html codes activated (disactivating codes helps to protect against viruses). If you want to check it out, send me a test e-mail to the address in my profile description.

We use dropbox to organise the band. We have online diaries so we check individual availability (a 10 piece band is like herding cats). We share mp3s and charts of tracks we want to learn. The horns put all their dots up there just in case we need to dep them. It is just brilliant.

My son used dropbox to send a best man's toast to his best friend's wedding reception. Military commitments kept him from being there in person..it was a real Kodak moment.
