Hi guys,
I have an old green bullet - a 520SLB which was originally on a base station. It's the lo z version though.
What is my best bet for making it into a good harp mic? Am I better trying to get it converted to hi z with a transformer or replacing the element altogether. If the latter, what should I replace it with?
At the moment, it just has 2 thin wires coming out of it so I will either need to fit a cable or some sort of connecter to it.
Better still, does anyone know of someone in/near London UK who could do this for me at a reasonable price.

Hi Brother jfffM,
So you have an old green bullet 520SLB
Whats your best bet for making it into a good harp mic?
would it be better trying to get it converted to hi z with a transformer
YES and NO;
what type of amp do you have,
you will find the shure, low-z Bullet has plenty of power for playing at home, enough to get you kicked out of your rental flate for noise violations,
but if you are useing on stage with a Band get the mini transformers from mouser.com i can give you the parts #,
keep the low-Z element there is no need to replace it with a Hi-Z, it will have as good some times better tone than a Hi-Z element,
to keep costs down it's better to find someone close by, get to know them you may be back,
you will find the conversions are cheap and simple to do, for a good Audio tech this should be a fairly simple job to do,

I agree with the Nasty Old Dog.
I like to build the transformer into the mic. I also like to convert the mic over to screw-on connector. Those elements can be very good - sometimes a little too hot, but a volume control can help there. ---------- /Greg

Those Shure Low Z's with a transformer are a hot set up ,.soon that will be the only Shure element you'll be able to get as the price of Hi Z's go up & people hoard the Hi Z's,..yes,. I'm guilty of being 1 of those people !
I Built Memphis Blood up for Giles King with a built in transformer an just an On-Off switch No Volume Control,. & 5/8" Switchcraft connector.
This is Giles King's Memphis Blood !

Hi Guys,
Thanks for your input so far.
Nasty Old Dog - I'm primarily a guitar player so no shortage of amps :) At home and for recording I use one of the little "Electar" valve amps (modded, so not a million miles away from a Fender Champ) but am seriously thinking of getting the re-issue Vox AC-4. If I ever get to the point where I gig with it, my usual guitar amp is a Musicman 65 watt 2x10 or an old Vox AC-30.
I am thinking that since the mic would have to be taken apart to fit either a cable or a screw-on connector, it would make sense to have the mini transformer fitted at the same time.
It is very good news that I probably will not need to replace the element (assuming it works).
If you could let me have that part number for the mini transformer, that would be great. So there is enough space inside the shell to fit it inside?
Thanks again guys,
Jeff

Yo Bro it's XICON Mini Transformer part #42TM117-RC
the reason i asked what amps you had and where played is,because the low-z mic will be less prone to feedback with a normal guitar amp
with the hardware you have and only playing at home recording the mic would do just fine as it is,
i have a Low-z 300 ohms Shure Black Label controlled reluctance element its great for home use louder than one would think, got no plans of fitting a transformer,
Good Luck with yout Mic Bro

Thanks for all your advice guys.
I decided to initially just wire a guitar cable to it, which I did tonight. Haven't been able to test it through anything decent yet but my little battery amp at least tells me it's working.
I'll play with it as it is for a few months before I decide on whether or not to fit volume control/screw connecter/transformer. Actually, I kind of like the simplicity of it.
Joe L, I would really encourage you to do this with your one as it's really easy to do and doesn't stop you from doing the more adventurous mods later if you want to.
