I've been using an old Hohner Echo harmonica recently, mostly to mimic the accordion sound in zydeco songs. I've had the echo for a long time but used it sparingly.

I would like to use an echo more often so I am looking for advice on buying some more. I have the kind that contain slightly sharp and slightly flat reeds, which I like. It's tuned sort of like Richter tuning.

Any recommendations?

Hohner only makes the double-sided echo anymore in a C/G combo. But they make single ones in all keys.

Seydel also makes two models, the Skydiver (Asian pseudo-solo tuning) and the Sailor (German tuning, the one you call Richter).

Most Asian models are in Asian tuning and have a drier tremolo (slower beating) that the German ones.

Thanks, Winslow.

Can I ask for your opinion on the octave tune tremolo vs. the slightly sharp/flat tuned tremolo harmonicas? I've never played the octave tuned ones. Is one louder? What is the difference in how they sound?

I appreciate your input!

I play echo (tremolo) harmonica quite often with the “contemporary Christian” band I play with. I find it works better with hymns and traditional stuff. With The more “contemporary” stuff I prefer the diatonics.
Easttop makes good sounding, affordable tremolos, but real “octave” harmonicas are few and far between. I find the octave harmonicas rather loud and brassy, but love the sound of my Seydel “Club steel” for certain songs. The Seydel is three times the cost of an Easttop tremolo…

Hi Harp buds,
I use double sided 56/64 echo harp c/g sometimes and found an ebay a/d which was in good shape. My 2 echo complaints are the the wood comb paint doesn't hold up- and I kinda feel I should be pointing the mic at the top of an echo. I should watch whatever Mickey Raphael does to mic his.

In my opinion, seydel fanfare is a really good option - if you like echo. I got one the A and then D since that ebay a/d is really more of a collector harp even though it sounds fabulous.

The artwork on the echo box is beyond perfect, but my fanfare boxes are sturdier and have a metal latch. Also the Fanfares i got have blue translucent combs and most importantly, a smooth metal mouthpiece cover that combines both rows into a single round hole- great idea! Adding the stainless reeds with that mouthpiece is probably why it's louder.

Hope everyone is playing jambalaya on their echo harps all day!

Robert
