Hi all,

I have aquired a Silvertone 1335 (15" speaker version). It is all original besides a cap job, 3 prong etc. It has a great sizzle to it and is very responsive. Curious if anyone has any experience with this amp. It could be tamed a bit like most guitar amps. It's pretty loud before it gets to feedback so overall volume isn't a problem at the moment. I'm curious about which, if any, tube swaps that may exist that will give me some different tone. Options, ya know?

I ask too because the tube layout is far different than I am used to. This amp is a fair bit older than my others.

Thoughts?

My guitar player (1967-70) had one. I used it sometimes and it was great. Just a stock JT-30 mic. Didn’t have problems. I remember it had a wood block vibrato pedal. Pretty cool. For advice on tube swaps I’d call Skip Simmons (530) 771-7345. I actually got a 1947 Silvertone 1300 from him which I used on a CD in 2021.

He has an encyclopedic knowledge of tube amps, wiring schematics, and tube substitutions. Tell him Kevin told you to call. His workbench is never empty and usually overflowing, but he always takes time out for friends so good to have a referral.

What tubes are in it now?

Thanks BnT. I’m familiar with Skip. Good advice.

Tube layout is as follows left to right looking at the back of the amp:

Lower Chassis: 6SJ7 GT, 12AX7, 6SN7 GT, 6L6G, 6L6G, 5Y3

Upper Chassis: 12AX7

I’ve tried the usual array of lower gain tubes in place of the 12AX7s. Not a huge difference. The AYs and AUs tame it down a bit opening up more adjustment with treb and Bass which is cool (more feedback free volume as well but that wasn’t really an issue…it’s loud).

For fun, you might try a 6SL7 in place of the 6SN7.
Context: I have a "Skipped" Masco head with a 6SL7 (and a 7F7). My notes say (probably based on what Skip told me) a 6SN7 can be used as a lower gain alt. to the 6SL7. My notes also say I preferred the 6SL7. FWIW.

Interesting. So, to be clear, the 6SL7 is a higher gain tube?

Yes, that is my understanding from my notes.
Higher gain may not be what you are looking for, but I thought to put it out there in case you like to experiment.
I suppose there is info out there regarding gain factors of these that might be more reliable than the marker notes scribbled on the padded envelopes holding these tubes.

I think there are also adapters ("Substitubes"from Groove Tubes) that allow you to put 12x7 type tubes in those slots.
I have one that is labelled 6SC7 to 12AX7.

Have fun.
