Rockin' Ron has great prices and customer service that is unparalleled. But he's a pal, so I am biased.

I am Gnarly Heman! I come by it honestly, it's an anagram of Gary Lehmann, which is what my mama named me. I used to live in San Diego for many years and had the opportunity to play music professionally. Then I got a big break, and became the harmonica warranty repair guy for Suzuki Music here in the US, a position I continue to hold. Moved back to Oklahoma at the end of 2020, still doing private repairs too. So I know Ron personally, but we don't have a professional relationship, other than the fact that he sends me disgruntled customers LOL Having said that, I fix a whole lot more Hohners than any other brand--there are more of them out there, and I do more chromatics than anything, since they are more expensive and thus better candidates for repair than diatonics, which are easier to either replace or install new reed plates. So now, who is HappyJ?

As long as we are talking San Diego (and I am) . . . Spring Harp Fest is a long running free event featuring high quality harmonica performers, always the Saturday before Easter. https://springharpfest.org/ It is the brainchild of my mentor, Harmonica John Frazer--he is directly responsible for my association with the free reed instrument. He is still gigging in SD and in fact recently told me that he has a new recording coming out soon. I hung out with Ron Hobdy (dragging this thread back on topic) many times while Daron Stinton and I manned the Suzuki booth, showing and demoing our wares. And Ron is, of course, also still doing it.

No, but my rates are competitive. It's $25 to clean and examine a diatonic, $35 for a chromatic. Any repairs are extra, as is return shipping. So reed plates are about the same price as repairs on a diatonic--depending on how much you pay, of course. Some are much more than $25 . . . Ron has free shipping! I didn't see SP20 RP, wonder if he's out or if they stopped selling them. I recommend you do your own repairs, and seek a technician if you get stuck. It's a better deal for you, and I have plenty of work--not as much as some, I'm looking at you George Miklas . . . BTW, I'm considering coming to SPAH this year, even tho respiratory diseases are still prevalent, and, well, you know, Texas . . .

That's a good idea for pricing. I should have used a structure like that. What was missing from my pricing was a fee for cleaning and inspection.

RR has Hohner reed plates that fit both the Progressive SP20 and Rockets. Screws are not included. If your SP20 is a newer Progressive model with the smaller screws you could try re-using the old ones. If you have an older Marine Band style SP20 you will need the smaller M1.6 screws for the new reed plates, but the plates will fit the older SP20s.

Gary, I am still thinking about going, but haven't decided. If it were Tulsa or St. Louis I would definitely be going. ----------
