I was given a Turner mic recently as part of a deal. The mic was allegedly a crystal. I have plenty of mics that I’m well-happy to use so I wasn’t too fussed but I was happy to take it. First time I used it lasted one set until I swapped back to something familiar. Super hot mic, really giving me a hard time staying boxed into a little feedback free space. I just put it away and left it away.
Anyway, today I picked up a bag and found this mic inside. I plugged it into the Sonny 2 and played it for awhile, then I gave in to curiosity and opened it up. The grill was quite difficult to remove but eventually came away and I found not a crystal at all, but a Controlled Magnetic from February 1963. That explains a couple of things.
The ‘gasket’ in this shell is actually something like modelling clay. The element is right up hard into the front of the grille and it’s puttied up all around the edge. That’s why it was difficult to remove the grille; the shell case was stuck into the putty.
This has me wondering about these shells. I’ve never seen one up close before but I know they’re a fairly common and popular shell. Do people usually have a silicon or rubber gasket in them or is this putty business normal? I was told this mic was built by Chuck Gurney. I really have no idea if that’s true. All I know is that it’s about the hottest-sounding mic I’ve encountered, but not the best-sounding imho.

I've got a blue Turner labelled 251; fin ground down some; element is puttied in. Got it from SJ. IIRC, he said it was a CM. There is some thin foamy material over the putty -- not very clean looking, but I suppose it doers the job. 1/4" female on bottom; VC on the butt. The band I played a lot of amplified with passed away during covid; for now I'm only acoustic -- lots of good mikes and amps (and tubes and speakers and pedals) laying around! Hey, I don't have to lug a 4x10 up a long flight of narrow, metal, outdoor, icy stairs.

Ah, also a 254, brushed chrome it appears -- from Dennis O. 1/4" female in butt, VC on bottom; crystal. My brother and I had a light blue Turner +2 back in CB days, so there is some nostalgia in these Turner's.

Thanks all for the replies. That’s very helpful. I appreciate you.
TJ, your SJ mic sounds same as mine. Original owner of my Avenger bought 2 mics with it and gave me one with the deal.

So, maybe the putty was Chuck Gurney's approach???
