Just curious where other players might use 3B instead of 2D in 2nd position? I know that 2D is what is primarily used to get the root note in 2nd pos, but there must be times when 3B can be used. Sometimes, I will 3B instead of 2D if I'm out of breath and need an exhale. Also sometimes i will 3B and then 2D right afterwards with a little shake.

Exactly what you said. I use the 3B instead when I need a breath if there's a run of tonic notes. Otherwise the 2D has more of a blues feel.

If you were employing pulls or slaps (chordal techniques), you might go with the 3B on the IV chord so that the chord matches the band. Also, if you were going for octaves, you could do the 3B/6B.

While I remember, I heard a good use of 2D and 3B yesterday but I can't recall which song. It was simply playing a repeating, rhythmic pattern just on the single note on 2D and 3B. I think this one was on the V chord down to the turnaround, but of course you can play it all over the changes. Because you never have to run out of breath you can keep it going throughout. Sounds good and punchy. I've heard it before, if I can find an example I'll post it.

One of SBW2's riffs in "help me" uses the three blow. I would call it "the" riff in help me. Listen to the song and try it out. I think people advocating 2D all the time are lazy players that hasn't put in enough time in the blow note technique. Just dig into it, learn vibrato etc. there is also a widespread myth or dogma that you can't bend then lower holes blow. When I have tested my harps I can get almost a semitone before the reed chokes and the OB sounds...

That said, in second pos I use the 2D 95% of the time or more but in "blownotes-positions" like first and fifth it sounds a lot better with the three blow, IMHO.
