Following the Tuba Skinny video, yes I do agree that there's no shame in a harp sounding like a harp. But I do like aspects of that brassy/trumpety sound like in that vid. Here's my attempt to put a bit of that through the little harp, acoustically. There are two takes, one with a loose cup and one with a tighter cup.
I'm trying to get as much bite as I can into note, with sharp articulations or TB or bleeding in adjacent holes. I bet a person could take this a lot further.
See what you think...
(BTW I'm using a sandwich-style harp here, so I can be persuaded!)

Wow MTG. Good stuff. I instantly started smiling. Because i find that the 3" is instant horn. And i think that was your main note if im not mistaken. The cupping was really good. I think you ll find playing amped and messing with effects combinations/settings will get you alot closer. I think it has to be muddied a bit to hide the reed noises and higher hz harp sounds. Idk. That's my initial thinking. I could be wrong. But it sounded great. ---------- "Trust Those Who Seek The Truth. Doubt Those Who Say They Have Found It."

Thank you. Oh yes, 3'' Eeeuch :(
Yes, I think amped would give more scope. But the grown ups are always saying we need to get the acoustic sound down first, then amplify that. So I'm taking their advice.

I always wanted to try some horn lines. Your video definitely inspired me and made me see just how much could be done. I bought some horn LPs at the flea market yesterday. I'm going to try and steal some licks.
I had a thought. Horn line is cool. But what if you had your pedals set up for horn for one part of a song. then clicked over to your harp setup and did horn and harp in the same song.
To take it even further what if you played the horn into a looper and then you could have them slightly overlap. Or fully overlap whatever. But those listening would really think you had a horn section. With the right delay it could sound like more than one horn also. Like a horn section. There's alot you could do with this. That's pretty cool. ---------- "Trust Those Who Seek The Truth. Doubt Those Who Say They Have Found It."

Actually that looper idea is interesting. There is a practical side to this - I think I mentioned - in that I'm having to supply horn lines for a new crop of 'crowd pleaser' songs. Doubling up the horn lines to be a one-man-band-horn section would be exciting. Maybe a bit too exciting, I think I'd be terrified with that on stage though! Imagine stomping in, in the wrong place and not being able to stop it! At least if I play a duff note on the harp I can stop breathing. And those harmonised horn lines need pinpoint timing - not the old sloppy blues harp timing :)
That would give a new dimension to my 'mad farm goose'.

Well with looperz i believe (i dont have one but ive seen some in action) you can prerecord things and add them to memory. So your backup could be prerecorded. Then you play another live overtop. With practice I'm sure you could pull it off. ---------- "Trust Those Who Seek The Truth. Doubt Those Who Say They Have Found It."

Nice MTG ! Enjoyed it . I find myself listening to songs and thinking that I might be able to swap harp playing for the horn , piano , etc. ( almost anything but guitar I guess ) part . Sometimes I get fairly close other times .... well , you know . Can usually do the horn part of Cash's " Ring of Fire " and not get " the hook " or any boos . Train stuff is fun on Folsom Prison Blues . I keep trying the keyboard parts of Del Shannon's Runaway and swear I will come up with a passable rendition someday ! Some accordion stuff ( a la Billy Joel tunes ) should be do-able . Are the possibilities endless , or just my ability ?

Halffast - Thank you. It is a current thing with me, working out where the harp might fit in to non natively harp songs.
...since you mention guitar, in fact I've spent some time going through an excellent blues-guitar-grooves book I have, working out how to play these grooves. Can't be note for note, but many can convey the spirit IMO. Unfortunately it's just for home use, as I in my band have two and sometimes three guitar guitarists chomping at the bit to play their parts.

kHz - yes indeed. You sparked a memory of, years ago, watching Johnny Marr (The Smiths) playing one of their songs live which had two guitar parts. I wondered how he was going to do it, and I saw him stomp down on a pedal and out came the 2nd guitar part. Very neat. In that case, he didn't play it and build it up in layers like you see those harp-boxers do, it was prerecorded.
Not for the faint-hearted though: who let the geese out?
