I hadn't cleaned my harps for - ahem - 'some time'. But it was a rainy, cold UK February day and anyway I wanted to try the cut-down toothbrush idea I read in the other place.

When I opened them (SP20s btw) they were clean as a whistle. Mostly bright brass, no nameless horror built up under the cover. That didn't use to be the case. Explain that with your logic and science.

BTW the cutdown toothbrush + cold water worked fine. No filaments catching in the reeds. Although there was nothing actually to clean off.

Just to show where things have got to, Mrs MTG found me cutting up a toothbrush on the dining-room table, and didn't bat an eyelid. Just another day.

MTG, cheers to your spouse! My wife still treats my playing like she does the stereo, "can you turn that down?!!"

The lab report just came in.

You have too many harmonicas in rotation, and Mrs MTG is giving you the silent treatment.

That's a good idea. The cut down toothbrush.

I just bust mine all the way down and usually just do it one at a time. If one is getting funny. I'll bust it down, clean it, flat sand it if i havent already, tune it and throw it back together. They usually have to be tuned atleast 2 or 3 times before it holds. But the first time is easier when it's apart. The other two are just tweaks.

But for a quick clean, if you routinely tap them out when your done playing, i find, you really only have to clean the front of the holes. I use a small pick for around the blow rivet and tine sides. Then i use a pipe cleaner to go all the way back. A real pipe cleaner. Not one i stole from a preschooler. They have bristles in them. You can get em at a tobacco store or head shop. They really work good and you don't have to worry about the bristles.
