Q. What's made of brass and sounds like Tom Jones? A. A trombone. (I heard that just yesterday)
In fact I was watching this vid for the super drumming, and it doesn't have any harmonica in it, but I thought there must surely be something for us to learn from the fantastic 'bone work.
I love the drummer's attitude. I'm not suggesting we shouldn't learn about music but he makes it sound so cool.
What I think we can learn from the trombone player in this video is: knowing when to play and when to lay out; sense of rhythm; and making the most impact with what you do play.
I liked the whole jam...I'm trying to remember how it went. Drums set it out for a few bars and when he does the roll it's like the signal for the Hammond to come in ...no I can't remember. I'll have to watch again but I think it's like an ensemble for a little while then everyone but the drummer drops out and he signals them back in with the roll and everyone takes a solo until finally it's the bass and then instead of dropping out they build it until the trombone has done its thang then it cuts. I mean it's a good way to build a jam...in the garage I go to, no one knows how to do that. But I think I will suggest we try something like that.
