i am just realy hating my self over this. any one else have anything recorded? im extreamly disapointed in mine. im debating whether or not to even upload it. i havnt work on it much either. an when i listen to other versions on youtube like gus gambler's im just like dam...i suck.
Even Sublime did a bit of a cover of Summertime... I wont be joining the contest though this one is above me I believe. ---------- ~Ryan Pennsylvania - H.A.R.P. (Harmonica Association 'Round Philly)
I'm hoping to partake in the comp but I have a mouth problem at the moment. I have stitches in the roof of my mouth which makes playing harp painful. I'm hoping to have them out on Thursday; hopefully I'll be able to start practicing again then. I had a routine in mind but I've forgotten what it was now. Should have recorded it. ----------
I was busking the tune over ten years ago, though, I wouldn't call my version back then anything more than competent.
I'm not too crazy about what I'm doing with it now, but, isn't that always the case when you practice something for long enough?
I'm still working on and hating my video response to Ant138's Key To The Highway. Whatever I do on that now sounds like crap to me. Though, it might sound alright to others.
Perhaps your Summertime will too, Jon. ---------- 'If it sounds GOOD to you, it's bitchen; if it sounds BAD to YOU, it's shitty' - Frank Zappa
Oliver, have a look at the rules thread. GermanHarpist gave details. I doubt weather most entries will be on the playlist 'til nearer the deadline. ---------- 'If it sounds GOOD to you, it's bitchen; if it sounds BAD to YOU, it's shitty' - Frank Zappa
As much as I hate to say it, but I can't make it this time (got other priorities that need my attention)
@ jon There are loads of versions of this song on youtube, from very simple to WAAYYY out of this world... but all worth listening, try to find something that you like, you still have time. I just watched something (a "version" of Summertime) I did for the Bushman 2007 contest 1 1/2 year ago..... it sucks big rocks, but it also gives me an indication of how much I have improved since then... so even though it sucks, I'm glad I did it.... GO SPARROW! SPREAD THOSE WINGS!!
This isn't Summertime but if you want you can check this out. The band I just joined "Burnin' Blue" was recorded last Monday. The harp was me. My ears tell me I need alot more practice. The songs are tagged pauhana blues band because they recorded it and mixed it. I played with both bands that night. It was a live rehearsal. www.myspace.com/pauhanabluesband The music is right on the home page. Oldwailer this ought to make you feel better.
Here's my version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l4YB02x43gI
I went for pretty simple, just played it as I remember it. Also, my mic decides it can't take the volume on about 2 minutes, which is a bit annoying, but let me know what you think anyway.
I also didn't realise it was supposed tp be here, i thought they were on the harpfriends playlist
Wasn't it supposed to be acoustic and without backing? I'd have done it differently if echo effects and backing were aloud :^( but then I've named mine wrong so that rules me out as well :^( and I can't be bothered to rename it.

Man this contest was a lot more more challenging for me without a backing track... I feel the need to at least attempt to follow the song's chord changes in my head.
I tried some octave bends which didn't turn out too well... I'm not even sure if the 1-4 draw bend is something people do but I tried it anyways
I don't know why the video cut out in the middle but I've played this song too many times now so there's no way I'm making another take.
OK Here's my entry. Seems like a lot of us struggled with what really is quite a simple straightforward tune. I'd like to know from those that know about these things, why it is we did struggle with it. Was it the fact there was no backing track to play along with. I'm sure I've learnt something from this exercise but I'm buggered if I know what it is.
tooka: It's a slow tune. Very little notes to play.. all expression, no runs behind which you can hide. More jazz than blues. And of course, without backing... at the end quite out of the ordinary.
MrSo&So: No, it does not have to be embedded here (otherwise it would say so in the rules) as long as it is added to the HPC2 Playlist on harpfriends.
The entries that were missing I added myself. At the moment there are lumpy, mrSo&So, tookatooka, jonsparrow, patrick barker, sorin and me. For all the others (and the ones I may have missed), add your entry to the playlist or tell me to do so.
There will be a voting thread on the 1st where the playlist will be embedded.
Least I forget: we've still got two days to go. C'mon everbody, if anybody has some burst of inspiration (ie they can beat their summertimephobia one last time) feel free to upload another try.
sorry i didnt know we had to add it to a playlist nor do i know how to do so even if i did know that.
also for me at least i think it was hard because it was difficult to make the tune origenal. its easy to play the song but to make it your own is the challenging part. gus gambler? or something like that on youtube. i think he has the best version out there. an after hearing his i just had no idea how i could make something that great. also i never even heard the song untill the contest was made.
So much wish I had a clue on how to play this. Hopefully I'll feel more comfortable with the next competition. Like last time these are all so very good.
And that cow... I mean... MOO!

Boy, this was a tuffy. The tune itself is easy peasy lemon squeezy. But, what to with it for three or four verses? At least in 3rd position.
Today, I finally gave up on trying to sustain any potential listener's interest when I play it that way. They'd probably want to kill me for the deep psychological damage I caused them.
So, I resorted to good old 2nd position and relied on what I can do already in said position. I've not listened to the other entries yet; I didn't want to for fear of making it harder to do my version. But, my hat off to those who made a good attempt in 3rd position.

Hi Aussie, I'll not develop my ideas on this forum, since I know for sure what would be the reaction of some private harmonica custo...And don't want to loose my time with them.
But I can say that: the sales manager of Suzuki offered me this harmonica, I've said thank you but I was a very little tiny bit not "happy" with the hole 5 and 6. He asked to his technician manager to tweark the harp. It only took 1 minute. And voila the result.
Once again it's a 40$ harmonica and for me it does the job.

That was great Christelle and I really enjoyed your entry (as I do with most of your videos on youtube) Lots of good stuff we can learn from...
Having said that, and I probably will get my ass chewed off because of what I'm going to say next, but it is just one of those cases where I should know better and shut up, but can't control myself....
Why is somebody who TEACHES harmonica a participant in the contest? Of course it is great to hear (and see) how a (semi?) pro harmonica teacher handles a song, but participating as a contestant.. if anything, you should be a judge...
Don't get me wrong Christelle, this is not personal (as in: "I'm against Christelle) I would still write the same thing if "Some Private Harmonica Custo.." who I will only identify as "B" , who is not also a great teacher and a Wizard of Scales & Positions but also a respected contributer to this wonderful forum. I would also write the same thing if a heavily tattooed fellow with the initials "JR" , who I might add, is also a great harmonica teacher and has some priceless "How To" vids on youtube would sent in his entry.... Here in Japan we call this "K.Y." (pronounced kay why) which roughly translates into "can't read the air", meaning a person who doesn't recognize a situation.... eg: If Carl Lewis asks at a local amateur tournament if he could do an exhibition run, everybody who be very honored and happy, but if he would register as a participant, THAT would be something different, THAT would be "K.Y." Now I DO remember the last time I wrote something controversial, and I should have learned my lesson then, but I didn't...... maybe I am the one who is K.Y........ if that's the case, well.... here are my apologies in advance.... ---------- DutchBones Tube

I thought she was just offering what she would do with the task.
Dutch what you're talking about reminds me of the movie Sweet and Lowdown when Sean Penn's character goes to a talent show and says he may have had one lesson then does some crazy Django stuffs. ---------- ~Ryan Pennsylvania - H.A.R.P. (Harmonica Association 'Round Philly)
@ Ryan - that's what I thought too, but in that case, just putting the video up here would do it, .... uh oohh.....just looking at the playlist..... sh%t, there is some really funky sweat pouring out of my body at the moment... it's not added to the contest playlist.... guess I got fooled by the HPC2 title..... "Hi Christelle! My name DutchBones and if you read my previous ranting... well don't worry about it, it was all in good fun.... and yes....we all agree.. I'm the one who is K.Y.........

(no, not mom as in mommy, it's me on my knees and my (bald) head and both hands on the ground .... (this is how we apologize in Japan) ---------- DutchBones Tube
