Okay, time to explain your nickname...So, are you a grill master, a gourmand, or did BBQ and Bob just sound good together(it does work pretty well)?

So inquiring minds really want to know???

Seriously, grill mster or gourmet I am not and the way I got the name has nothing to do with that.

I actually got the name from one of the very first bands I ever worked with and the guitar player, who was also the frontman/MC of the band kept introducing me with a different name except my real name almost every night until he began listening to the original Barbeque Bob (Robert Hicks), who was a 12 string/slide guitar player from the Atlanta, GA area who passed away in the 1930's and an album of his I got that has some of his stuff documented is Chocolate To The Bone.

When I did a gig in NYC at now defunct Tramps at its old Union Square location, some friends of mine from the area, namely Danny Russo (who, IMO, does the best Howlin' Wolf and James Cotton sound, bar none, outside of the man himself) and Paul Oscher (who was more often going under the name of Brooklyn Slim back then), tolf me about this other guy using the name (his real name is Robert Pomeroy and his site is http://www.bbq-bob.com), who I had never heard of at the time.

When I opened up for James Harmon in the early 90's here in Boston at the long defunct Ed Burke's, James also told me that there was a guitar player in the Denver, CO area also using that name (and his real name wasn't even Bob).

However, neither of these guys have ever worked with Jimmy Rogers, and also neither of them can claim for a fact, which I can and did, about playing on part of the soundtrack for the hit movie, "Fried Green Tomatoes," and the CD soundtrack has one tune that was used (tho in the movie, they just used the ending in the parking lot accident scene), which was a cover of Lightnin' Slim's "Rooster Blues," and this is credited as Peter Wolf with Ronnie Earl & The Broadcasters, and the lineup on this was Peter Wolf on vocals, Ronnie Earl on guitar, Dave Maxwell on piano, myself on harmonica, Mudcat Ward on bass, and Per Hansen on drums.

As far as money goes from the movie, like any other studio session musician, I was paid only for the session anbd that's that and the only two people still collecting a royalty from this tune are Peter Wolf and Ronnie Earl.

One of New Orleans' favorite adopted harp-playing sons used to be known as Jumpin' Johnny Sansone, due to his acrobatic jumps and flips in the 70's while onstage. Nowadays, he's dropped the 'Jumpin' moniker...Still a great player, though. Also a great singer and accordion player.

I remember Danny Russo would take me into the bathrooms of the myriad clubs we would bump into each other because of the reverb. I would ask him to do this riff and that riff over and over and over. Man was i infatuated with his sound. P.O. aka Brooklyn Slim sure gave my obnoxious self a lot of dirty looks back then. I remember doing a talent contest thing around 1985 at a short lived joint named Abilines where I played with or against the "other" Barbecue Bob" (myself and Michael Hill won the month long contest. I'm surprised you never landed on one of Victoria Spivey's albums (along with her "Danny Boy") There are a lot of stories back then I'd rather not remember.

Okay... NICKNAMES!

Mine is Shakey. Partly an homage to Big Walter, partly because I used to be a drinker (sobered up 5+ years ago), and partly because I shake the harp sometimes when I play. The name was given to me by a guitar player in a previous band in Sacramento.

Also, Cheyenne Slim (from years ago). Also Tricky Rick, a name given to me more recently by a current bandmate.

Let's hear 'em! What is your harp nickname?

@ Todd: "Thanks for the good story, Bob. Maybe it was only MY enquiring mind..."

Maybe so. But, I still enjoy reading Bob's and Walter's stories. They imbue this site with priceless stuff.

@ Rick: I like your story too. I also used to get the shakes. Though, the older I get, the more pointless getting nervous seems to be. By the way, my nickname(s) is my handle here and my YouTube channel. I can't decide which to stick with.

Will do! If you`re on Facebook, I`ve got a page there too, so be on the look out. At this moment, I don`t have an exact date, but I may be participating in another one of Mr. Nick`s harp throwdowns, but this time at Chan`s in Woonsocket, RI. One of them I did last year also had Racky Thomas, Annie Raines, Darrell Nulisch and myself on the bill backed up by Monster Mike Welch on guitar, Mudcat Ward on bass and Per Hansen on drums

Mick, I don't shake the harp from nervousness. It's an old-school vibrato effect.

Hey BBQ... I am glad that the blues has been good to you! I remember all those guys... Danny, Oscher, Little Mike, Danny D (gtr), Ola... New York was hoppin back then.... And I bet you knew "Red" too (not a player but a fave on the seen)!
But I have to say in defense of the Bob Pomeroy that he has been using that moniker for a very long time (at least the thirty years that I've known him)and he is no slouch! He plays great harp and guitar and with vocals he can do a lot of things... and well. I'm sure Adam would agree. Bob P has played all over the country and abroad with some pretty heavy credentials too... glad there is room for both of you in our world!

Nancy: Yes, I was going to say exactly the same thing and am happy to see your post. BBQ Bob (Pomeroy) was working NYC as a pro when I was still a rank amateur--a grad-student wannabe at Columbia in 1982. He gigged regularly on campus and at the Blue Rose Lounge. He worked regularly, if I recall, with bassist Harry Holt and drummer Charles "Honeyboy" Otis, or at least he sometimes worked with them. He made a couple of 45s in the mid-80s that had regional airplay.

I'll repeat: he was a gigging pro in NYC when I was nothing more than a wannabe. And he let me sit in a few times back then. There is indeed room for two great players named BBQ Bob.

The name, BTW, refers to men who prefer young-ish girls. BBQ is code for "pigmeat" (as in, Pigmeat Markham), and in the broadest sense it simply means a lusty guy who likes 'em younger rather than older. I got this from Paul Oliver's classic study of the blues, BLUES FELL THIS MORNING (1960), and will be happy to provide a page reference, if challenged on this point.

Blogward, is this true or a helluva put on? lol. Anyway, I did some gigs up here with a guitarist named Little Frankie who used to say that whenever he gigged with me, he had to rename himself French Fry Frankie. I`ve been tagged with this name since the 70`s.

Big Nancy, when I did the Tramps gig with Jimmy Rogers, Ola Dixon was the drummer on that tour

I am not sure who came first, but I too remember BBQ in the NYC area. We both often played at WFMU on John Narucki's show. I remember you too Nancy. I lived in New brunswick for a bit and remember meeting you at a basement club. I think (those days are blurry>>>) was hanging with George Gomas who was booking otis rush and sonny rhodes. Do you know what George is up too? Last time I talked to him, years ago, he was injured in fight he was breaking up while subbing at a highschool. How about Terry who ran tramps? How about Danny? I use to hang outside dan lynches and ride around in his cab and we would blow harps together. Both of us were thrown out of dany lynches. Walter

Danny doesn't do much playing anymore as he is in pretty much retired from playing mode.

Dennis, if I was around NYC a lot more, I might've had more of a chance to be on the Victoria Spivey stuff.

First, I don't know blogward... but I love him already... Shishkey Bob indeed!

Thanks for the second Adam... BBQ Pomeroy is too important a figure to sweep under the carpet. I am sure that he played with a lot of the original daddies but I haven't seen him lately and don't wish to risk telling lies... so I will refrain from naming names. I also don't put a lot of creedence in defining some one's work by who they've played with.

However, Pomeroy's BBQ Bob and the Spareribs did feature Honeyboy Otis as a regular member... with Ira Spinrad for a long time. Bob was originally from the mid-west and I think he may be back there now... would love to find out where he is if any of you know.

barbeque, If it was the old tramps on Irving then I was there.... How long were you with Jimmy? Where's Jimmy Lane these days?

Walter, great to hear from you! I'm sure you are still kickin the hell out of your axe... you monster! It is so cool that there are so many good harp players here...! Thanks Adam!

I dont know where Terry is.. he was a hell of a guy (am I allowed to use this language here???)... but I lost touch. And pretty much the same with Danny Russo... haven't seen him since Dan and I booked Hubert in Bridgewater back in 92. Always loved that guy too! (As for George... NO mas...!!!)

Hope to run into you again sometime... and all of you guys and gals. Why doesn't somebody talk to one of these hotels about a harper convention???

I did a couple of short tours with Jimmy in 1977 and 1981, and then Steve Guyger took over, who I met at Tramps at its old location. We're still good friends to this day.

I think Jimmy Lane's based more out of Kansas City these days. I haven't seen him in a few years.

FYI, I'm going to add both BBQ Bobs to my honorable mention.

Note to all who yearn to be added to the wall of fame: neither guy asked me to add them. That's why I'm adding them: because I've seen them both play and they are pros.

If you love amped blues harp and you don't yet have this mans CD you really need to put him down on your buy list, and I mean like right now. i've had this recording for a couple of weeks now and i'm wearing it thin.
His CD stands up well amongst a lot of other choice stuff in my collection.

A lot of the stuff I've learned came from reading, asking tons of questions, experimenting, TONS of listening, paying VERY close attention to detail, plus meeting a number of different musical heroes of mine, and even eventually working with a few of them, like Jimmy Rogers, who had told me one night that he thought I was right up there with one of his favorite harp players, Kim Wilson, and my jaw just dropped when he said that. I've never let this really get out there because too many would think of me as being conceited, but I had to press the down button on my elevated ego when he said that, and coming from him, who had played with so many blues legends from both Walters, both Sonny Boys, Muddy, Wolf, and so many more, and someone who was a helluva harp player in his own right as well, it was an ultimate compliment and he didn't give those out freely at all. (Gotta press that down button again!)

I've never been a music teacher in any school and I haven't given lessons in many years.
