I am so very sad to report that the harmonica community has lost a good one. Harvey Berman passed away on Friday in Pensacola, FL. I do not have any details of his passing. I did speak with Harvey on the phone for about 50 minutes mid day Thursday. He seemed to be doing fine. Just the usual complaints about getting old (he was soon to be 80), but other than that, he was his usual jovial self.

When I started Blue Moon nearly 15 years ago, Harvey was my 8th customer ever. He was probably the first customer to call me on the phone. He offered friendly and spot on critiquing of my products and helped me improve them. We became fast friends and over the years, we have spent many an hour on the phone as we both worked in our respective shops building harmonicas. He was a dear dear friend and he will be missed.

Harvey worked on dozens of my harps before I began working with Joe Spiers! We hung in NYC when he's visited, when out to hear music, introduced our woman, etc....A great big personality with a big heart!

Just an FYI. Harvery's daughter has scheduled a memorial service, celebration of life type of event at the Paradise Bar & Grill on Pensacola Beach on Sunday Sept. 22. Here is the link for more information on that event.

https://www.facebook.com/events/493970060164071

I will be attending the Celebration and will also be meeting with Harvery's daughter to sort things out in his shop. In our last conversation, Harvey told me that he was all caught up, but it is possible that some harps were en route to him or maybe already on his bench when he passed. I will do my best to figure out if there are any projects that need to be addressed. If it is a simple repair, I will likely do it myself. So, if you have recently sent anything to Harvey, please let me know so I can look for it.

I remember when Buddha passed unexpectedly and Laurie had to sort out his bench.
Not much fun, thanks to Tom for stepping up.
Maybe I should stop now so as not to leave folks in the lurch.

I had an old email in my inbox from Harvey. It's been there for years. I had a messed up comb and he offered to fix it me. There always seemed to be something else that I needed to deal with first. I left it in the inbox, always meaning to take him up on it, but never got around to it.

He was a nice guy. Looking at that email reminds me of that.

I was saddened to hear this news. I didn’t have a lot of direct correspondence with Harvey but I respected his opinions and I’m grateful for his contributions. RIP

Today is the day of the memorial, I am remembering my encounters with our harp buddy.
Play a bent note for Harvey, I have a “Harvey Harp” in the garage and will play Taps—in second position, of course.

I haven't checked this board in probably a couple years--so sorry to learn of Harvey's passing. I have several "HarveyHarps"--and they are all great instruments. Always seemed to me that Harvey worked on harps more for the love of it than the money. Condolences to his family and all who knew him much better than I did.
